I am a long time supporter of classic and now I am here. I like the idea of what we are trying to do, and dispite a few miner hickups the program runs fine i am quite sure they will work it out in the end.

Welcome James. I hope you find this product a very worth while experience. Plenty of helpful people here, so don't be afraid to ask. Lots of resources here to pretty much answer anything you could probably come up with. :-) Once again, welcome to the program. :-)

Welcome to BOINC there Jim. You will find it quite fun to be here. Even with the hiccups, for the most part we can still access these boards. The Café is the place for general fun and chit chat. Go on over and check it out.... Again, welcome.... >:-)

If I had a couple thousand, I'd "double down" and get more puters for my farm.

does that give you my answer?

huh, it seems your answer is my thoughts when I look at my bank statement - ok, it's "if only I had...", but still ;)

Reasons? Ok: I'm a believer.

- I believe there's life elsewhere in the universe, even intelligent life
- I believe humans will find traces of, evidence of that life
- I believe SETI@home is one way of searching and finding
- I believe that what we do here matters, makes a difference for mankind and it's future
- I believe BOINC eventually will pave the way for a better life for us all
- I believe the fun of the competition, and the diverse gain from the projects outweigh the periodic frustrations of outages, bugs etc.

And I could go on. Did I mention I'm a believer? ;)

It was interesting to try and help finding aliens. It was then fun trying to see how many work units you could do. Then it was fun to see how cheaply I could build a new computer because I had the extra parts laying around. Does one person really need 5 computers? Too bad they keep taking away any fun reason for contributing.

Been here since May of '99 , don't plan on leaving now. Have invested too much effort to quit.

Until it´s fixed i´m switching all of my machines to LHC.

Having read through all the posts and agreeing with most all, all I can say is I've been at it for 5 years and plan on hanging in there until we find ET or the wheels fall off. Then there's that rumor that the one who finds that golden signal gets a free beer. I'm in!

I wanna find ET!

and its about the competition as well....

Leaving.

After months and months of staring at finished work units that won't upload, white-background message boards, and illegible GUI print, I'm finished with SETI@home.

I'm going to find a DC prog that actually works.

Adios!

Staying, definitely. I'm relatively new since I just switched to BOINC in March. Its such a worthwhile project a few blips in the overall processing aren't going affect my enthusiasm for the project. Chances for finding an actual signal may be slim -- "but if we don't even look, the chances are zero!"

Its a great place to learn more about managing the program and the people here are interesting and informative (maybe a tad bit on the contentious side at times, but that also makes for interesting).

All my best,
Kathy

If your not sure where to search for ET, you can start with anything and anything is better than nothing !
Even if the possibility to spot ET this way is allmost NULL ........
I'm part of it because I'm part of it, and probably will be until the New hardware deny's me even the download of WU's.
Maybe then I'l go back to my Telescope and search the sky for the streak of a earthbound Spacecraft.

Objective reasons please.

Because BOINC, by itself, is an interesting experiment.

The engineering challenge is to run reliable projects on inexpensive (and therefore unreliable) infrastructure.

The social challenge is to see if users can understand and tolerate that.

Message 138435 - Posted: 18 Jul 2005, 19:14:59 UTC - in response to Message 138385.

Reasons:

1. Having public evidence of existing alien intelligence would be the most significant and decisive milestone in the history of mankind, with unpredictable consequences on a massive scale and scope.

2. SETI@home is a challenge at last. The likelihood that we will find evidence this way is near absolute zero. I find this very appealing.

3. With several years behind the project, we are at ther very-very beginning. SETI@home needs every bit of suuport to stay on track improving its computing capacity, coverage in frequency, direction and time.

The reasons stated here are identical to my own, even described better than I could. I am becoming increasingly skeptical that we will find alien life based on the methodology of SETI's model. As more projects come online SETI will receive proportionately less computing power from me.

BOINC shows great propmise.
