...Now all ye high priests hit me again and again with your vested interest accounts of why ye wise all knowing folk always know best and anyone who complains around here is a rogue and an outcast. BS detector turned on! Flame proof suit deployed!

Well, simply ignore the high priests (i call them cheerleaders) and let them pray their BS like a prayer mill. Beat them with their own weapons and simply ignore what they say, cause it's plain stupid simple BS-Propaganda. I've already been through this. The high priests aka cheerleaders are absolutely advisory resistant, so save your energy for something more useful ;)

Ulrich you are probably right. It just gets me mad when someone says there aint a problem.....when there clearly is. Some are like horses in blinkers....they don't even know its daylight!

Cheers I will crunch on but they must act to save losing a lot!

It was a planned outage, and it lasted no time at all in real terms. Monday sometime to Tuesday sometime. One day. One, whole, rather short, day.

It's now Friday, 4 days later, and Uploads are still on the Fritz.

Does not bode well, as when Classic finally shuts down a % of classic users will make the switch, and Seti-Boinc can't cope now....:-((

I wonder if in view of the delays they will extend the time limit for the uploads?

Pessimistic NaySayer!

One thing to keep in mind is that when Classic does shut down, SetiBoinc will be able to move some of the machines from Classic to BOINC, thereby helping to minimize the burden of the new load.

Besides that... necessity is the mother of invention. When they get their backs against the wall, they WILL come up with a solution. It probably won't be the perfect solution, but it will helpl buy them some time.

They are making progress and I am very proud of the progress they have made. I admire them for the dedication they have had to BOINC and to Seti.

They shouldn't have to extend the time. WU's should not be in any trouble unless
1) a WU que is filled to the max (10 days) (for what reason, I don't know other than to run into deadline problems.)

2) the computer is very very slow by todays standards and it takes nearly 2 weeks to complete a WU.

UGHH...

Now I remember why I got burned out on reading the S@H forums. Nothing but a bunch of bickering and complaining.

You are all a bunch of biddies staring at the computer screen looking for something to go wrong. When something doesn't work like it usually does you start jumping up and down and screaming about how incompetent the staff at Berkeley is.

I think I will stay with the Einstein and LHC forums. Although they move a lot slower, those people are much more positive and friendly.

Jim

I'm afraid time will come when you crunch a WU faster than can report results back to Berkeley. Either due to jammed hardware or networking issues. Expanding the time frame will not solve the problem but prolong only the agony.

I doubt it.

The "System At Berkeley" it well programmed/Written, and has allowed me to upload those of my WU's that are getting close to deadline. It's just not letting me upload those with "time to spare." (seems like a good idea to me, let the uploads through that are running out of time.)

I'm happy in the knowledge that it all works. I just wish it looked like it worked...

At this time yesterday I had 261 waiting to upload. Today I have 267 waiting. During the planned outage I got up to nearly 400, so there was some progress, but that seems to have stopped.

You have your computers hidden. I wanted to see what you were running that you are getting numbers like that.

The problem that you can't down or upload an they have worked on this problem for 100 hour. I certainly expect more form a university. It's not a matter of budget it's a lack of skill.

I that the status page says the transitioner is running again. I wonder if part of the problem is that they were running out of drive space to store the returned data.

I take it that was pointed at me... Yet if you'd taken the time to read my post here, the one you addressed your first rant at, you'd seen what I said.

As said, and as far as we know (read: are informed about), there is no problem to be fixed, they aren't trying to fix things.

That's what I said. You just copying part of the sentence, then plainly saying that I said there's no problem is going a bit too far for me.

I can't help it that you can only read what you want to read and then go off on that. So if you want to be mad, go ahead. Just not at me because you like selective reading.

The developers read these message boards. So, complaints made here serve a valuable function: they let the Berkeley crew know what is going wrong and needs to be attended to. Don't let anyone tell you that you should just shut up about a problem you are having.

When the Monday-Tuesday outage was over and after many hours people pointed out that uploads were very slow, the blind cheerleaders simply said it was a backlog due to the outage. And while that was partly true, here we are about four days later and the upload problems persist (download too, but not so bad). A look at cricket shows that traffic has returned to normal levels, but there have been significant periods of dropped access, so the problem is not merely the outage.

In the past, very often, problems that have been raised here are explained only because someone asked about them and fixed soon thereafter. So, keep "complaining" (do check other posts first), it does do some good.

I'm doing my bit to take pressure off; I have suspended all seti work until it works properly. As I said in other threads they will get from me something equivilant to what they give me.

The way to take the pressure off is to set the cache back down to what it was before the outage was announced!

No, there is no 'problem' related to upload/download that anyone has spent the last 100 hours on. It is simply a matter of server capacity. The solution is clear - more hardware, but that hardware is not currently available.

Oh please tell me, where can i buy the magic glass globe, that told you that.

[edit] BTW: If you're such a wizard with the glass globe:
Can you tell, why the traffic on the link is actually lower than before the outage?

What do people not understand about the following "The file upload/download server is 100% (yes 100 percent) cpu bound"? It's upload and download, hence data bandwidth are compromised at the moment by it's TOTAL inability to process any faster or any more than what it currently is doing, simply because it has NO, NONE, ZERO, spare cpu cycles.
Overload any computer with too much to do, and watch it crawl.
The staff at berkeley are trying to establish what is tying up the UL/DL server, and have stated that they are considering splitting the two functions.
Beyond that, they are not miracle workers, as Mike has said, servers will not materialise out of thin air, and unless, (big assumption) people don't back off their update buttons and reduce their cache sizes to pre-outage levels, then the current issues will continue.

Just my 2 pennies worth.

From Technical news:
July 13, 2005 - 22:00 UTC
.....
As well, there is still a backlog of people trying to connect to our upload/download server, which has been buckling under the load since the outage earlier this week. This server is completely CPU bound, so we're looking into ways to lighten its load (perhaps splitting uploading and downloading to two separate machines, but we don't really have a good spare machine just yet).

They do know they have an issue, however a little update on the issue would be nice. i.e. "The upload server is still slow due to the amount of WU's to upload. WU's with the shortest deadline will be excepted first and then other as CPU allocation allows." Or any other information would be great even though it has been only 2 days from the last update.
