My suggestion is to drop seti clasic. Not over night, stop "feeding" the bears with new wu's first and let them know that. Then, after 2 weeks they can close all that.
I don't think thou that the problem is purely hardware overload. I think is something else wrong in software.
It's becoming ridicolous... I have not been able to upload a single unit since friday. Manually or not...

You all sound like people off the street walking into an ER and telling the Dr or Dr's on duty that they need to see this patient first instead of that patient. Or telling the Dr that just because this pt is having chest pain that it HAS to be a heart attack while forgetting all the while that there are a hundred other reasons why a person could be having chest pain.

**starts loooking around his bedroom looking for the Valium to calm his nerves after reading all of this whining in this thread.**

One of these days I'm going to learn to just find something else to read.

Did you ever hear the saying "Who is runing after two rabbits, is catching no one?"
What's the point to waste resources on something that was ANNOUNCED one year ago that will be shut down?
Even doctors have triage - in emergency, they leave the dying cases behind, for the ones that can be saved.

/me hands Jim a bottle of ICEd Canadian beer.

Now just drink that and then take it easy, before people around here mark you as a Cheerleader.
The fun thing of being a Cheerleader is that the nomination has changed overnight from being a fan of Boinc to being a fan of Seti.
Or maybe we're both still. Even if we don't crunch for Seti.

Anyway Jim, just calm down. On the right there there's a bed which is soft enough to make the biggest complainer here fall asleep here in under 1 minute. :)

I am well aware of triage. I am just saying that we don't have all the info to make informed decisions. We have little bits and pieces of info. We have been filling in the blanks with assumptions.

We cannot run just one test, or use just one finding to diagnose a problem. We are on the outside looking in. Like it or not we can only see what they show us.

You ask why not just shut it down right now when it was announced over a year ago. I look at it a different way... After a year of knowing that the project is going down, why do people still crunch classic WU's? Especially after info was released that Classic is just rehashing old WU's over and over, thus not really doing any more real science.

The way I see it, the staff is trying to not alienate the people on the classic side. They are playing a balancing act right now. Trying to do the most good within the given parameters. Obviously they are not going to "save" everyone. They are going to alienate people.

Are they doing a good job? All I can say is that they are taking on a daunting task. I honestly believe they are doing thier best given thier current working parameters. Does that mean everything is running perfectly? NO. Could it be done better? I guess that all depends upon your definition of "better".

I personally would much rather give them encouragement and support rather than constantly criticizing every move they make.

Yes there are problems and yes they know it. They've even stated that they know they have problems. I do not expect them to tell me every little test they are going to run in an effort to find the problem. Granted, infomation is nice, but even I have more of a life (usually) than to sit around and hen-peck this project to the bone. But then again, I guess some people are not happy unless the sh**-pot is not stirred. Some people just thrive on causing problems for other people.

So, over all.... take a chill pill. Go out, have a cup of coffe, take the wife out for dinner, watch the sun rise, or sun set. just get away from your computers and SETI and let your blood pressure drop back down into the normal levels.

Jim

(Dr, I think he is having a SETI induced CVA. (aka stroke) What ever shall we do?

Jim, I think you said it best. Quit complaining. No computer system is ever 100% error free, things happen, and we have to deal with that fact. Some have 5 WU's to upload, some 200+. Theres nothing that can be done until the people at Berkley come to work after the weekend is over. Everyone knows that BOINC is still a work in progress, they are trying to better things, they don't happen overnight, it takes time. Time is of the essence here. Sit back, relax, just let your computer do its thing. I also get frustrated that WU's aren't uploading or downloading, but theres no need for me to sit here and whine and complain about something that is completely out of my hands. When it comes up, it comes up, if it stays down, well, nothing I can do now is there? Let the flaming/whining/complaining continue.

Thank you for the vote of confidence.

Now, I think I am going to try to get my attention towards something different.

good night.

:-) Your welcome Jim. I agree, Im having dinner, going out to a movie, and in all the while my computer is still actually (and suprisingly) d/ling work units and crunching them. So have a good night, probably come back to more complaining.

I'm waiting for the person complaining that his house burnt down, because he was forced to have his computers on trying to upload Seti units, then something broke down in his PC, a fire broke out and he was at the movies with his family...

He'll blame it on the fact that he couldn't upload to Seti.
And he'll be accompanied by all the Radicals who are against how Seti does things and blame the Cheerleaders of misinformation. ;)

What we do know is that it's very rare that anybody from UCB SSL fights problems on weekends.

Monday morning it will be "Oh, I had something to do - what was it? Oh ya, we had a connection problem to look into. Anybody going to get coffee? Did I tell you about the gig the band had this weekend? I'll take cream, no sugar. Anywy, about the gig..."

Well it was because of Nurse Rita (or at least the dream I was having about her. LOL)

Then I woke up and realized that it was just all a dream. :( Such is life.

I agree with Tigher. End Classic Now!

If they do it tomorrow, will you, Tigher and ecpa be around here 24 hours a day to ward off the complaints of everyone who was still crunching 5.00 to 600.00 units of Classic but have no where to return them to?

Will you? Because if the answer to that is no, you could perhaps withdraw your arrogance a bit and understand others concerns.

Concern about what exactly? Credits? RAC? Quota per Day?
I'm interested. :)

I have a thought. Since the servers are currently at 100% capacity (my understanding... I don't understand it all so tell me if this cant work)... Make it to where 1 out of every 6 hours, or however many they want, the servers only accept uploads to try to get things caught up. So 4 times a day, 4 hours a day, no one will be able to download (which if everyone has it set up right, they have a couple of extras sitting on their computer anyway) and everyone can upload. Then when things get caught up, change it to three total hours a day, then two.. and find out where things start getting backed up again and leave it there.. The downloading isn't the important thing, because people can store extra's on their computer.. So an hour at a time not being able to download shouldn't hurt anyone.

Just my 3.5 cents.

Chris

I can't upload the completed WUs. Any suggestions?

Who would've thought that my little comment 3 days ago would have sparked a 58 page (on my printer) conversation/debate/arguement/discussion/insertyourwordhere about the situation.

Concerns about what is happening to the project, and their clients.
Your reluctance to give a straight answer is noted.
