> I think that adding more updates gets to the point where they are spending > more time providing updates than they need to be. *** If they have time to post on these boards, as you have noted, then they have time to post instead on a central status page which would be more helpful. > They provide enough to let > us know what is going on. *** I understand you feel that way, please understand I don't however. > And at the moment, there doesn't seem to be much > "planned" maintnance. It just happens because they discover something that > needs to be fixed quickly. *** "Seem?" That's what I am talking about. Why can't they state clearly, one way or the other? > HOWEVER, I have posted another message asking for a form of automatic updating > when and if feasible because I do think it would be nice to find out that > there is a problem and have some idea of what it is until clarification can be > given. You can search my posts and read it if you want. *** I'll take you on your honor for that. I'm glad to see we have some common ground. > I don't think Classic did poorly. It had some downtime, but was one of the > most reliable solid programs I've ever run, and it was free. BOINC works too, > but it is essentially still beta, a public release beta if you will. *** I didn't mean the app was bad. I simply meant that a lot of times when it went down, you didn't know why, project level or your box. > No. This comes from the implication (largely by others) that SETI isn't doing > their jobs and isn't fixing anything and so forth. It is just to point out > that they DO have something to lose and it isn't really OUR problem if things > aren't done. It isn't OUR project so WE don't have anything to lose. Many > people take it as a personal insult that not everything works properly yet. *** I know the Seti guys have a lot of work. No dispute from me on that. > Well difference of opinion. *** I agree. > I don't see why we need to know everything that > happens. I don't see why we need to know anymore about the outages while they > are happening than we already do. *** Well, for example it would be nice to know when an outage occurs, even if it is not known at the time why. People could then check their clients against this timestamp to see if that is when they started having problems getting WUs etc. > More thorough explanations are great after > the fact though when the problem at hand no longer requires intent focus. *** Rom's explanations would do nicely on a central status page rather than here. > Civility is great. And as far as I can tell, out of pretty much everyone who > has been complaing about things, you have been one of the most civil so I am > sorry for digging into you so badly, *** Thanks, I appreciate that. > I can only imagine the difficulties of such a > large scale multicomponent system such as the BOINC SETI project. *** Certainly it is a complex problem. But after enough programming, you start to get intuitive about these things. Plus, there should be a lot of logs being written. > When things > go wrong and start degrading, you react to the problem, not go announce it to > everyone and then work on it. *** It is not either/or. Besides, it does not take a lot of time to say, "At 15;30 UTC 22JUL04 we began having problems with Seti. If you are not getting work units and/or receiving the message 'No reply from scheduler,' please be advised that this is a problem on our end. Nothing is wrong with your client and we will advise you further as more details become availible." > Maybe sometime in dealing with it someone can go> > explain what's going on if it's taking a while. But otherwise the primary > focus should be on correcting the problem. Reporting to us should only be a > secondary agenda at that point. *** Again, I have to disagree with you. A lot of developers feel that way but frankly, that is not good development practice. End users are WHY we write software. Hence, they should be informed. And, as I pointed out, it is not either inform people OR fix the problem. > He does a lot of the posting on the main page. There are help files. There are > clear instructions. *** A lot of the Help info is kind of a jumbled mess. It is informative if you know how to find it, however. Help and Faqs should be top level links on the site. Instead they are buried. > There are lots of users who help on the userboards. And I > am sure you noticed that this forum has more activity and the bulk of the > users go through here to get information and help, and that to me, makes this > a fairly good central place for him to post. *** 1. I actually think the forums are too general. 2. It is time consuming to have to follow a thread to find the answer to some of these problems (if there is one). 3. they have an annoying tendency of taking the boards (and sometimes the main page itself) down when the project really goes down. |

> Ok first, now that there are workunits, maybe we can put an end to this thread *** Yeah, you are right! In any case, I'm done. I just wanted to offer my .02 cents. |

If there's no work then there's no work. ------------ Theres Work Unit to be had, believe me. I've downloaded a boat load of them in the last few hours. In fact I downloaded 17 more of them while I was typing this. So don't say theres no work to be had ... JOIN TEAM |

Finite work supply Each work unit is now processed a limited number of times (typically three). When we have no work for your computer, you'll get a 'no work available' message. We encourage you to participate in other BOINC-based projects; then, when SETI@home has no work, your computer can stay busy doing other scientific research. Now, now, boys... Settle down... PoorBoy, and E.T... 'Idiot' is rather a strong word to be bandied about here... I know that recent events with BOINC/S@H have us ALL on edge, but you two just need a little more mellowness. Chill out, dudes, BOINC/S@H isn't worth fighting over like this. Its just a distributed computing project, not something REALLY inflamatory like religion or politics... :P ------------ KWSN-MajorKong KWSN Forum Admin (retired) http://www.kwsnforum.com BOINC Beta tester |

I bumped up my cache so that it pulls down 7-10 days worth of work. Last time there was a rolling blackout, I worked through something like a quarter of my cache, and tonight when I checked it, it updated and refilled the cache. Question: by pulling down so much work, am I being a pig and reducing available work for other members? Am I keeping a full tank at the expense of everyone else? If so, should I put it back down to avoid this? |

Question: by pulling down so much work, am I being a pig and reducing available work for other members? Am I keeping a full tank at the expense of everyone else? If so, should I put it back down to avoid this? ========== I look at it as a first come first served way or survival of the fittest ... If I have 150 cached work units between my PC's & I can get more then I get more...Do you think these guys with 50 or 100 Computers are worried if you have any WU's, I highly doubt it. So why should you be worried if they have any WU's... The only thing I watch out for is to not download too many that I can't get them done before the 2 week deadline. You have to know what your PC's are capable of putting out each day and then figure that into how many you cache according to the deadline dates that are showing for the WU's. @ E.T. ... Peace Bro, it was late & I took your post as another whining can't get no WU's post ... ;) JOIN TEAM |

Like MattDavis said, AZWoody got what he deserved, but not because of his opinions about BOINC, but his abrasive manner in relaying them. He finally had achieved a critical mass of 'offensiveness' and a few of us here started giving him the 'forum' equivalent of a spanking over his bad behavior. It seems to have worked, since AZWoody appears to have mellowed out somewhat. > Uh, good comeback? Still fumbling over your own words? You're still writing > before reading. E.T., please be careful with your 'older person' rhetoric. Some of us ARE 'older' and are not really the way that you make us out to be. Thank you. I just noticed that you were using a stereotype "typical little kid or elderly old man". I had to add one to my 'age' yesterday, and I guess I am feeling it a bit much. I may only be middle-aged, but I do feel like an old man at times. All these aches and pains (hip injury, back injury, arthritis, etc.) that I didn't have many years ago when I was a young adult. I took it a bit personally. I apologize. Peace, man! Have a wonderful day! |
