Hi everybody,

sometimes it really gets bizarre. I recently got a mail from "ebay", stating my account will expire if I don't enter my password in a form supplied on the web. The english was absolutely perfect, no flaws whatever (but of course ebay would not send such a mail).

But the bizarre aspect was: it seemed to be a bad copy from real pages existent on the web but the authors didn't seem to really understand our alphabet. It looked something like this:

Dear cuslomer,

we need to inforin you thal your accovnt vvill exqire lf...

and so on. It looked like a bad scan generating lots of these terrible character replacements. If I had had the chance to look one of those guys in the face I would have loughed out loudly. So good and yet soooo dumb. Whoever got into that trap, I'd really like to know.

Regards,

Christoph

Unfortunately, My eldest daughter fell for such a scam. She did not tell her mother and I when it happened, she felt she was "in Control" of her finances. Well anyway, she recieved and email from a bank in South Dakota that told her bank had contacted them and identified her as one of their "good Customers"and that they were taking over ATM and Credit services from her bank (Never Mentioning Her Banks Name). They went as far as asking for her preference in Card design, number of cards needed/ And then the big stuff. "Please fill in the spaces with your account number printed on your ATM card, the expiration date, and your pin number. "This information will be verified and carried over to your new MasterCard Debit Card". Don't forget to include the 3 or 4 digit "security code" imprinted on the back of your card".
Nine days later, she got 4 returned check notices from her bank. After taking a trip down to her bank, she found out that her checking account had been overdrawn in excess of 2,000.00 (she had 1,000.00 overdraft protection) and her mastercard had 3100.00 in charges on it. The bank closed that account, issued a new account to her, however, she is out the money because, it was not the Banks Fault..it was hers for releasing the info. Her Banks Info, and website, in Bold letters tells it's customers that they will never ask to verify info through Email or By Phone. Only by direct Company Letter head in US mail, which needs to be returned to a branch, and not mailed back. She did not have to pay back the Credit card, she had insurance on that, but to this day, thee have still been no arrests or further developments in her case. This happened 13 months ago. (I hope she has learned from this)

Respectfully,

Rocky

The fact that these types of phishing hoaxes are still being manufactured and circulated is the funniest factor for me.

It indicates that there must still be a percentage of people that actually fall for it, however small...

Does anyone actually have firsthand knowledge of someone that fell for such a scam? Would anyone actually admit it?

You'd be surprised at how often this scam works and it works because Joe & Jolene Average out there are basically stupid. There's frequently reports on the local TV news and local papers warning about these scams and they always have a few people that want to show how stupid they really are by being interviewed about how they were taken in. That takes care of the 18-65 age group who really should know better.

Seniors are another group who are even more easily pulled into these scams but for other reasons. Given that more and more of them are getting computers to keep in contact with family and usually much more trustworthy of people, they do tend to trust things that look official. Besides, if the local senior population around my location is any indication elsewhere, half are bordering on senility.

If you're wise enough to go through the process of obtaining an ATM card and understanding the secrecy of a PIN code, how is it that you'd be fool enough to part with this information at the request of an email? The mind boggles.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to get an ATM card. Just go to my local food store on a weekday afternoon when the senior citizens are out in force and get stuck behind a few in the checkout line. Usually the cashier ends up having to input the PIN number after the senior tells them it (and sometimes loud enough to be heard several people back in line) because they can't figure out how to swipe the ATM card in the card reader, enter the PIN number and press enter but they have an ATM card.

To truly explore, one must keep an open mind...

I don't see how you went off topic, Alex. If anything, it's a warning to peeps not to put their email address on here, even though I wonder if there's any crawler around here. Does it need to be on the server, or can it come from the outside as well (by script, just searching etc.)?

The email harvesters that spammers use are programs on their computers that search the net for things like the '@' and mailto HTML tags on web pages. That's what the robot does, it spends all its time scanning. So the crawler is in a remote location.

The poison CGI script program is installed on the web server you want to protect. There are some scripts out there that can be installed on a certain page in the HTML that you want to protect. But a complete CGI script program, like Wpoison for example, installed on a web server is way better. I'm not sure if it's 100% secure though.

I run a share ware program intended to report Spammers to their ISP in the hope their activities will be stopped. I've been running it for almost 2 months and although the number decreased after the first two weeks it hit a plateau at around 100 a day.

The up shot is I'm ready to give up on my crusade to get back at spammers.

I've said this some time ago: One of the simplest ways spammers get peoples email is using programs to snoop for addresses from message boards, say like this one.

Well, there is one neat thing that can be done to fight usenet 'harvesters'. You do this by poisoning the webpage with all kinds of junk email addresses (CGI script) . So when the harvester bots scan a certain webpage looking for victim email, they end up with lots of infinate loops made by poisonous addresses instead that pollute their lists, haha.

Sorry to get off topic Ageless.

I'm no expert but it seems most of the abuse comes from China, Korea, Russia and various places in some third word countries. Contrary to what was said above, most of these Spammers are sophisticated enough to bounce messages directed to their SPAM abuse addresses, use ISP that don't care or likely make money by hosting this kind of traffic. I can't see any way to get to these people.

Finally, the SPAM fighter program will also send reports to the internet carriers who allow their machines and connections to be used as a gateway to other parts of the internet (please forgive me if my characterization is misleading). Most of these companies don't seem to respond either. I don't know if they can do anything or if the volume is to great to handle.

The up shot is I'm ready to give up on my crusade to get back at spammers.

This one is funny... and frightening:

A Genuine College Degree in 2 Weeks!
Have you ever thought that the only thing stopping you from
a great job and better pay was a few letters behind your name?

BA BSc MA MSc MBA PhD

Within 2 weeks!
No study Required!
100% Verifiable!

These are real, genuine degrees that include Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate degrees. They are verifiable and student records and transcripts are also available. This little known secret has been kept quiet for years. The opportunity exists due to a legal loophole allowing some established colleges to award degrees at their own discretion. With all of the attention that this news has been generating, I wouldn't be suprised to see this loophole closed very soon.

Order yours today!

Increased sexual desire - Enhanced libido
Rock hard erections - Erections like steel
Multiple orgasms - Cum again and again
Longer orgasms - The longest most intense orgasms of your life
Ejaculate like a porn star - Stronger ejaculation (watch
where your aiming)
Sweeter tasting sperm - Studies show it improves the flavor

Sweeter... LMAO... have they tested it out themselves?

i'll bet the people who taste it are told that it's tapioca pudding.

No, they have served tapioca pudding and told people, that it was s****!
