On Vermonts Web Page this is one of the requirements to check to see Do you think that would be so they can keep track of who is looking at the info in case something happens? I mean in most places LOTS of info is available, look at the abortion clinics, they have had to start being VERY secretive because of people like Eric Rudolph. There have been MANY shows about people getting others "outed" and forcing them to move etc., when in fact the person on the list has done nothing wrong since they did the time for their crime. I think EVERYONE deserves a chance to prove themselves. If you were caught and are on the list, then I WILL keep a better eye out but as long as you behave I am not afraid to have you as a neighbor! You being used generically ONLY!!

On Vermonts Web Page this is one of the requirements to check to see Yea, it looks like on the Vermont site you have to go through a big process to get information. And also a person requesting has to articulate a public safety concern to get any detailed data. At least, they should provide photos of the child sex offenders in the immediate area. That way if there are families living close by, they could tell their kids what places to avoid. I agree, it's wrong to protect the offenders privacy if there's a chance that they might offend again. |

Not so fast, bucko. Well, it seemed like a useful source. But I can see what your talking about. I've looked at some of the sites more, and much of the info isn't really that specific. But the Florida link gives good information on some of the most dangerous people to look out for in the state. ....Lastly, what parents need to spend their time on is educating themselves on how to educate their children regarding this issue. Too many Americans can't even bring themselves to teach their daughters the proper names for their sex organs. How in the world can such people have open and informative discussions with their children? The blunt and sad answer is: they can't. There's probly only so much a parent can do to educate their children though. Mean, even if you educate them, that might not help them from a violent predator. But it might get them out of a situation where someone may try to bait them. Um, Santa Barbara sounds pretty expensive. |

I think I'll end this thread with this post. Not so fast, bucko. I was keeping up with the Dean Arthur Schwartzmiller case some today and happened to find a useful web source that has links to sex offender databases throughout America at CBS. If you have kids than it may be very useful for protecting your kids from sex offenders that might be in your area. Here's the CBS link: Sex Offender Database I have perused a good number of these Megan's Law Databases. California's only recently came on line. Up until very recently, you have to go to the local police department (or not so local as was the case here, I had to drive into Santa Barbara to one specific police station). Then you had to provide two forms of ID, listen to a lecture and sign a letter acknowedging you heard it and understand that if you do anything with this information you yourself will go to jail. Nice touch. Anyway... They are not useful tools for any parent to track sex offenders in any given neighborhood. What it MIGHT show you is if your town is friendly to sex offenders. Why do I say that? Well for one thing the databases all seem to be updated only quarterly or semi-annually. I live in a small south Santa Barbara County city. There were only a handful of sex offenders listed and very few of them had what might be considered "reputable" info in the database. MOST of them had notes on their records which said "offender has not registered in x years". In other words, here's his picture, but we have no idea where he's at. I poked around that database for a while and saw that some cities seemed to have a higher number of registered sex offenders than others. My city's number is relatively low, but then there's only about 15,000 people living here. And, this is an expensive place to live (2 br, 1 bath, no yard condos in a supposedly working class neighborhood > $500,000). Another problem is knowing how different states classify different types of sex crimes. A 20 year old man can be convicted of statuatory rape dating his 17 year old girlfriend. That is NOT the same thing as a paedophile. In fact, some of the databases don't give you enough information at all. The details are often very vague. So what does this do? It either leads to a false sense of security (I know where those bastards are! I know what they look like! My kids are safe.) or an outrageous sense of paranoia (OMG! They're everywhere! There's a sex offender the next block over! MARTHA ORDER THE STEEL BARS & SECURITY SHUTTERS!). Lastly, what parents need to spend their time on is educating themselves on how to educate their children regarding this issue. Too many Americans can't even bring themselves to teach their daughters the proper names for their sex organs. How in the world can such people have open and informative discussions with their children? The blunt and sad answer is: they can't. It is a very complex issue to be sure. The Megan's Law databases are a nice idea, but are inadequate. Too many people are going to use them as a crutch instead of doing the real work that is necessary to protect their offspring.

One of the other significant parts of that story is that the authorities did not put a stop to it when they had the chance. Besides that, there's no mention of holding any of the states where this abuse took place responsible for not putting a stop to it. There are supposed to be all kinds of great laws that the goverment says are there to protect children and political people seem to say this too. But if that's so, why doesn't the government go after people that produce and then distribute child porn on P2P networks. P2P networks for sure can filter out certain file types that contain child porn, but they haven't done it, and the authorities, government, politicians, etc, have not put pressure on them to do it. So they aren't really protecting children like they say they do. |

I did the math. Thanks NA for the Math! I knew something didn't add up (pun) The problem is all news paths report the same numbers. It is digusting for any type of abuse of children and they should hang these people up by the weinies untill thay are dead and it breaks off.

I did the math. The fishy part is probly that ABC and the AP maybe got thier math mixed up somewhere. For 35 years the number would be quite high though. |

I did the math. If it's 36,000 cases over 35 years, that's 2.816 times per day for the last three and a half decades. Something's fishy. |

36,000 times in several states, Mexico and Brazil over thirty years... The way I understand it is that it was the repeated abuse of many hundreds of, or even a few thousand children over the course of about thirty years. |

From ABC News: This is probably one of the largest cases of abuse against children ever. It's said to be the worst in US history. This person was even arrested nine times and then let go. Very strange and tragic. From the Associated Press via ABC News: 36,000 times in several states, Mexico and Brazil over thirty years... Do the math....Please..

Very strange and tragic. From the Associated Press via ABC News: By KIM CURTIS The Associated Press Jun. 18, 2005 - Despite being arrested at least nine times for molesting boys, Dean Arthur Schwartzmiller managed to avoid lengthy prison terms, coach youth football, move in with another convicted sex offender and be named by authorities as one of the most prolific child molesters in history.... more at ABC News |
