Is that a good idea or not?

Yes and no.

It's a good idea in that you won't have to worry about your optimized app being deleted by BOINC.

It's bad that if there is a big bugfix or upgrade to the science code, many people will still be running outdated versions. Seems to me there could be validation problems.

On this computer alpha seti 4.18 took 3 hrs
Seti 4.11 takes 1.5 hrs
We need the 4.18 to be optimized.

The dev's pointed him to the source code for 4.18 earlier today. Give him a little time to work his magic and I think we'll be happy crunchers!

You want one?
You get one! :D

Presuming Tetsuji will maintain the filename of his optimized client, I made a new version of the app_info.xml.

This time I made a zip archive, containing also a readme with step by step instructions.
You can download it from my site

Be aware not to use this without having the optimized client V4.18!!!

If I wanted to complete my cache of 4.09 WUs using the optimized client and switch to the Berkeley 4.18 client for new WUs until TMR has time to optimize would the app_info file work? I think so but I am not 100% sure. If I download the Berkeley 4.18 client and use the new app_info.xml file I think that for 4.18 WUs it will use the Berkeley application client. Then when TMR releases an optimized version all I have to do is delete the berkeley client and install TMRs, assuming it has the same file name. Or would I need to change the version_num tag for this to work correctly?

Any help appreciated.

Did I miss that? TMR did enquire about the SETI Enhanced code location, but I've not seen a specific 4.18 enquiry.

If TMR is in the middle of optimizing SETI Enhanced, he may have his plate full and we may need wait a bit for 4.18 optimization.

I'm sure it will come as night follows day ;)
Until then (or cache empties) BOINC's running Network disabled.

Just to clarify:

What happens if I do nothing (running optimised client now)?
-Does the seti download new client 4.18 and start using that (slower)
-Or does the old app_info.xml force packets to be calculated with 4.11 (optimised) client? (And possibly causing some problems)

I don't know much about 4.18...AFAIK 4.18 is a graphic-enhanced version, so I won't the optimized version of that one...am I wrong?

Now I'm tackling seti-beta (seti-enhanced) on Linux....Window$ will follow...

I know 4.18 has supposedly fixed the ATI graphics issues but as for what else I don't know.

Optimised P & N versions of 4.18 would be nice when you get chance ;)

P.S. did you read in this thread about trux's improvements from disabling debugging in the makefile? Don't know if your optimised versions used that?

Presuming Tetsuji will maintain the filename of his optimized client, I made a new version of the app_info.xml.

I suspect you need to change the first version_num in the file to 418. :)

In the absence of an optimised 4.18 client, is it safe to modify the app_info.xml to use the 4.11 optimised client for workunits requiring 4.18?

Hmm, I cannot see why they would'nt. Remember that we still have an old Linux client about, and as long as this client is there in its current format, then the math should be the same, hence the wu's should verify ok

okay...then all my optimized versions are really optimized;i.e. no debugging info or graphics capabilities are included in the code ;) I purely pursue the speed. YAOSCW (and YAOSCL) is just my whim.

I don't think any development in calculation will be done in this SETI@home, because the algorithm won't change (though some additional feature can be developed, such as graphics.) If there are any new algorithms, there will be another project...that's the current SETI beta.

Yes!
I took the "old" app_info.xml and added the "new" 4.18, referring all clients to use this file.
So all WUs get crunched with the 4.18.
That for: Don't use this new app_info.xml, unless you really have the 4.09/4.11 replaced with the 4.18!

If I download the Berkeley 4.18 client and use the new app_info.xml file I think that for 4.18 WUs it will use the Berkeley application client. Then when TMR releases an optimized version all I have to do is delete the berkeley client and install TMRs, assuming it has the same file name.
Yes! Right this way.

You don't need to (must not!) modify, unless you got the 4.18

Only WUs which were downloaded with the 4.18, require the 4.18 for crunching...
