With BOINC the GUI and CLI run at about the same speed. With Classic (which is going to be discontinued soon) there was a large difference between the two versions.

Versions of BOINC before 4.20 had two different versions of the core. One was a CLI and the other was a GUI.

Versions of BOINC 4.20 and later have split the daemon from the interface. The daemon does all of the logic about what project to run or download from next etc. The interface is a GUI only until version 4.45 which offers a CLI interface controller as well. The UI does not have to be running while the deamon and project code is running.

thanks!

GUI: Graphical User Interface
CLI: Command Line Interface

Often the command-line version can be faster because it doesn't have to use any CPU time to create onscreen graphics. All processing power goes into crunching data.

The 3D swishing that Seti@Home graph does is interesting... Though I really think that CPU time would be used better with simple graphics that we're used to...

That is the screen saver, and it is separate, you don't have to use it, and you can get rid of the swishing that it does (I hate it as well). You can configure it on this web site in your account - S@H settings (use the custom settings).

thank you very much!
