Resolution...! Have at last found why the problem occurred - seems Windows Installer Service wasn't registered via the Registry - so renamed the three relevant files (msiexec.exe, msihnd.dll, msi.dll to *.old - all are in the system32 folder) then re-installed the v2.0 Windows Installer Service program found on the MS website. Following that, BOINC v4.43 installed perfectly (having first uninstalled v4.19). Hope this helps anyone else. I also got an error message when trying to download and install the beta version 4.43 I tried downloading it several times without success, so I'm stuck with the 4.25 version. Also, why do people have different versions of SETI@home? Andrew |

continuing... Have just checked the MS website, found the v2.0 "Windows Installer Services" download and now find that I get the error message (when trying to install "WIS v2.0"): "The specified service already exists". (typical "bl**dy" miscosoft help....!) So, am I stuck? Do I have to upgrade the Win OS on this old NT4 (SP6) machine just so I can use BOINC v4.43 so as not to download any more CPDN WU's....! Seems like a lot of work to go through just so I don't get more WU's on this PC. Timbo regards, Tim Founder, UK BOINC Team Join us @ UK BOINC Team: http://www.ukboincteam.org.uk/newforum

I rather like the ability of the new v4.43 (dev release) to allow the user to decide if new WU's are to be downloaded, as I have one machine which I'd like to "retire" once it's finished it's current run of CPDN (and don't wish to download more CPDN WU's on this machine). So, I thought I'd upgrade to v4.43. Having uninstalled v4.19, when running the v4.43 installer (on an NT4 dual CPU machine), I get the following error message: "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnnel for assistance." As this PC is NOT running in safe mode and as it has had a few other program install quite successfully in the past, I'm a bit perplexed as to why this error occurs now. Anyone have a similar issue or a solution? regards, Timbo regards, Tim Founder, UK BOINC Team Join us @ UK BOINC Team: http://www.ukboincteam.org.uk/newforum
