Nope, it's the most current BIOS available from ECS. Others I know that have the same issue have also flashed the BIOS on their boards (various makes) to the most current BIOS and still have the same issue. It's routine procedure for me now to enter into the BIOS screen and then back out. That extra few seconds gives the HD the time it needs to get up to speed so that it won't cause problems during a boot. That's the problem, it takes this particular model of HD longer to get up to speed than other HD's. Once it spins up for the boot up, it behaves fine after that. I do need a new HD though so I can back this one up properly with a complete mirror copy.

My gripe is less with the Maxtor HD but more with Western Digital HD. I've had little problem with the one Maxtor HD I have in another PC (4 years) but the Western Digital drive in my primary PC (2 years) is a royal pain. I always have to manually go into the BIOS every time I boot up, do nothing in the BIOS, back out and then it will boot without a disk failure. It's the only HD I have that has that problem. I know a few others that have the same issue with the WD HD's and the BIOS fun but other HD's work fine on their systems.

Flying formation with ya on this one. My Maxtor 120GB SATA died after a month of operation. Having never experienced a crash so soon after install, I stupidly didn't have backups of the important stuff (my previous drive was reformatted for TiVo/Linux). Luckily I fiddled with the hardware a bit, and got all the data off of it, though it took FOREVER to transfer.

My gripe is Maxtor. Makers of failed harddrives everywhere.
