raven,

the one in my yard has weathered -30 F temps, so I expect that Zone 2 is ok for some subspecies and I would guess there are many more that would do ok in Zone 3.

Japanese Maples do just fine in the Lower Mainland and Island regions of British Columbia... I see them in yards all over. I don't know how well they do in some inland areas, which vary between desert, like the Okanagan, or have seriously cold winters, like the northern interior.

all this talk of gardening and the snow is not yet gone from my yard.

it's almost time to start though, it doesn't get dark till almost midnight now, so that old sun is doing it's thing and the ground will eventually thaw.

The perennials are peeking out, waking from their long slumber, so it's soon to be spring.

As soon as I can turn the dirt, the root crops will be the first to be planted.

<blockquote>There's a neat thing they do in Portland Oregon....

They designate and mark trees with a 'heritage'.... there are plaques and you can get maps to the different trees.

You can travel around the city and see different species that have a 'history' in the town.

It's a great concept and I hope that kind of thing is done in other places....

Pretty neat to see even some of the trees that were there before the city grew up around them and the program gives them a chance to be saved and appreciated by all.

We do that here in UK for certain trees. Especially historical references (some being fiction though) like Robin Hood and the great oak in Nottinghamshire. We also have huge tree preservation programmes. Every single tree in my area - bar those acers - is protected and if I prune it let alone cut it down I could go to gaol!.

Is that a tulip tree?

Just a guess and I don't know the latin term... it looks like a tree we used to call a tulip tree.

It's the only one I've seen around this state and I'm quite proud of it.

I get many nice surpised comments from visitors.

I dug the tree out of a University test bed that was going to be plowed under....

The root wad was about 7 foot around !! The picture doesn't have any reference in it but the tree itself is about 6 foot at it's widest spread.

I've not planted any of the seeds yet, but I see no reason they wouldn't be viable.

Someday, I do expect to start some to give away to friends who admire the tree.

This one is doing fine in my yard in Alaska.... Zone 2

It isn't as tall as it might be if it were in a warmer clime, but it is plenty hardy.

It's about twenty five years old and I do save the seeds it produces.

Ah. All I could find was the family name. There are many different varieties, it seems.

Noooooo. "Acer Palmatum Dissectum Garnet"! Great trees! Quite expensive too. The two you see there would be £50-80 each (or $100 - 160) in UK.
