Does the BOINC platform / Seti projects work on an Athlon64 FX-55 machine runing WindowsXP-64bit edition? I'm wanting to upgrade but I still want to be able to run BOINC. Thanks. |

As far as I know there isn't one in 64-bit! However, if you run 64-bit windows you will still be able to run BOINC in 32-bit because AMD64 bit version of windows supports both 64bit and 32bit emulation. It works very well. If u want a fully functioning 64-bit boinc.. you will need to compile your self with the needed changes, or join the devel mailing list and see if there isn't already a "unofficial" copy floating around. Same goes for if u want to run 64-bit linux. There has been discussion on whether you will even see a performance gain on WU times, because it is mainly floating point calculations. the AMD64 will give you better graphics generation and what not. If you are interested in high calculation capacity with a 64-bit processor, go with a Alpha (RISC) prossessor before Compaq bought them.. like the 21164 or 21264 model, they are only like 200-1000Ghz prossesors. even though their speed is slow, they would whip any of our current top processors like Opterons, AMD64, ZEONs and so on. |

I am in the process of upgrading to Windows X64 with an Athlon64, too. I get the impression that running in 64 bits would make more of a difference for some BOINC projects than for others, but I'm very anxious to see what those differences are. There must be an increasing number of people with 64-bit processors running 64-bit operating systems. So I have a couple questions: 1) Is it just BOINC for which a 64-bit version has to be developed, or each BOINC project (I run them all), or both? 2) I haven't the faintest idea how to compile my own versions for 64-bit operation. Surely there must be 64-bit releases in the works by now, no? Has anyone heard anything? |

Most (all?) of the projects do massive amounts of floating point arithmetic. Floating point arithmetic is not affected at all by the 64 bit integer operations. None of the projects has felt the need to create a 64 bit version yet, as there would be very little gain. BOINC WIKI |
