All mile file extensions show, pet peeve I like to see them. Besides I write coding for other apps I run and need to see them. I also tried using the name that didn't work either. Attempted to use the target option told in another responce, it doesn't like that won't let me use it. Tells me that it's not valid. Tried comment area for the heck of it, needless to say that didn't work either. Not a biggy, one day it will all come together. |

Its also possible your file has the wrong name. Happens if Windows Explorer hides extensions. Use Windows Explorer to view the BOINC directory. How does the file appear? As "remote_hosts" with "cfg" as the type - which is correct? Or "remote_hosts.cfg" with something else as the type like "txt" which is wrong as that says the file is named remote_hosts.cfg.txt. You can change Explorer so it doesn't hide by changing the folder options. Thats one of the Tools menu items. Switch to the View tab and uncheck the box for "hide extensions for known files". Click "OK" and check the file again. It should be remote_hosts.cfg And make sure its has the underline between remote and hosts, and make sure that its hosts, with the "s". |

Of course I have time being the project is kinda > "sickly" at the moment. Just like the linux version and/or CLI version for Windows. Of course, there's a but: you can not do it by clicking on the program file in explorer, you have to create a shortcut. If you then go into properties of this shortcut, you can add up cmd line options in the Target section. Metod ...

Restarting those two got me into the situation where even with a full network restart 2 computers insisted that the IP address did not exist. Even releasing and renewing the leases on the IP address did not work ... |

Created the file and then started it. The IP is the IP of the machine I want to use to connect. And yes, The IP in the config is the same as the one in the message log, and the PC I'm trying to connect from. I will try using the name, and there is nothing in front of or behind the IP, just the IP. I don't have a clue as to how to use the "-allow_remote_gui_rpc" with the windows version. I'd like to get thhis figured out becuase I'm about to bring up another system. Of course I have time being the project is kinda "sickly" at the moment. |

Did you restart BOINC after you created remote_hosts.cfg? It only reads the file at startup time. And if you have the command line option "-allow_remote_gui_rpc" remove it, that doesn't always work and when it doesn't, won't accept the .cfg file either. |

(I can see everything of my linux box through my windows box, but I > can't update to upload the results) Did you create a file named remote_hosts.cfg in the BOINC directory of your Linux machine? If not create one (it is a normal text file) and put in there the IP of your windows machine - XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX, for instance 192.168.0.1. Also be sure you're not using some of RC versions of BoincView to control Boinc 4.1x - use an earlier version. |

What Version of BOINCview are you using ? I've looked at your Systems, and it seems you're using BOINC V4.13. Therefor, BOINCview V0.92d is the Version of BOINCview you need. The access via File System (File/Printer Sharing under Windows, Samba/SMB under Linux) IMHO only allows to Monitor the Clients (no remote Control) Only via Network Control (GUI_RPC) Commands can be given and full control gained over remote Clients. Requirements : - remote_hosts.cfg on the remote machine in BOINC Main Directory - BOINCview V0.92d for controlling BOINC V4.13/4.19 Clients - Network Config in BOINCview : Target IP, Port 31416 + Appropriate Proxy Settings/permissions in the remote and Local Box of course (see Message Tab of the Linux Client to denote any errors) ++ granted Traffic through Firewalls, if installed (local and remote) (this can be a nasty factor if forgotten) That's basically all I know how to make BOINCview work. So far, I'm using V0.92d to Control 20 remote Clients running BOINC V4.19 and V4.55 (WinXP, Win2000, Linux, Irix) --------- BOINCview specifics : You have to select the Host on the left side, then click/Highlight the Project with the finished (Ready to Report) WorkUnit in the Main Window. Then choose "Update selected Project" from the Update Button's Context Menu. If all is correct, the right numbers put into the right places and Network Connection + Proxy is enabled with Firewall permission, it "should" work.

(I can see everything of my linux box through my windows box, but I > can't update to upload the results) You have to select a host and project before update works. Some tabs you view implicitly set them - like when you select a WU you get a host and project "selected" for that WU. I found it always works when I do this: Select the system you want to update in the left pane list view, then click the "Project" tab in the right pane and select the project you want to "update". (if you only have one project, it'll already be selected, but you still need to switch to the projects tab). Click the Update button. A confirmation box will pop up asking "Update project x on y" (x and y are the selections you made), click "yes". |

Yes I placed the .cfg file in the Boinc directory of each PC. The only ones I didn't need to was my local box and the two linux boxes. I'm just kind "ignant" about some stuff some times, that seemed to be a simple straight forward kinda procedure. |

It needs to be in the boinc directory of each of the machines that you want BoincView to monitor/control. I control 4 Linux boxes, a Win2k box and the local Linux box all from BoincView running in Wine. Be lucky Neil |

Now there's a point. I use my XP box to control my linux boxes. It does this just fine, no problems, just start them with remote-gui_etc... But I can't figure out how to do that with windows versions for my other boxes, I also tried remote_host.cfg, as stated in the documentation. I placed the IP in a text file, but this failed. Is there something else that needs to be in this file, perhaps some other commands. Sure would be nice if a template or exaple was available to propagate mine from. |

Thats the same you will say "you don't like tcp/ip because... because of the bookmarks.. Make the difference between application and communication! make your own gui and learn how to deal with rpc |

The amount of memory "eaten" by BoincView in RPC mode depends on how many messages are shown :) |

> I personally dont like the RPC mode because it eats too much memory It's using 0.2% of 512Mb here, according to "top". Samba or NFS would use a lot more than that. ;) Be lucky Neil |
