I have to say that one of our presidents got elected with about 38% of the vote, and he talked about his mandate... go figure 60% hated him enough to vote elsewhere ... no mandate there ...

No there are plenty of other issues (but I would never argue the greed angle is false). I would argue that the 3rd world exemptions (and methodology for assigning the status) is deeply problematic. China is not a 3rd world country, the people live in similar conditions there, but the country itself is well beyond production capacities to allow a free pass (and expect any real change).

The whole accord fails, in large part because it adds incentive to push manufacturing to unregulated countries. This simply shifts our (in a world sense) pollution production to a new place. This new place, will be unaffected by your precious Kyoto accord as I've yet to see an appropiate mechanism to redesignate these once 3rd world countries. Nothing is solved, infact it is made worse (assumes the raising of living standards in the benefited countries).

Another part of the third world problem, they are not forced to adopt "cleaner" processes. So even if the reductions do come from us elite developed countries, all the better(cleaner) technology to make it happen, it is a real crap shoot if it will be implemented in the developing countries. IMO, the 3rd world beneficiaries will use today's standard equipment none too clean and not very efficient.

Still looking for something profound or inspirational to place here.

I voted for the candidate that best suited my political opinions.
And it got me another six years of our "distinguished" senior senator :-(

I just hope Europeans don't think that all Americans are Bush supporters.
They know that.

I guess we'll mosey on off to the Café...

Agreed, sorry for this 'cafe-talk' on this board.

Back on topic (sort of): I just learned that we're expected to keep old Climate work units on our computer despite the fact that they're several hundred megabytes apiece! I have no problem crunching, but they want us to save them on our HDs or on CD! I run Boinc because it's all automatic - I don't have the time to back stuff up on CD for them. And as just about 60% of all americans voted, it's just 30% support for this warmonger and climate killer at all;-)

Of course the US won't sign it. Would mean cutting production and not being such a "superpower" when it comes to trade.

That's the only "major flaw" in it. F*&ken greed.

On a related note, see BBC Global Dimming.

Out of over 74000 constituents here, only THREE people commented to their local MP. Yet a few swear words in a 'Gerry Springer play' caused 60 complaints to the same MP!

The comments in the article about politicians not being interested should be extended to include most of the non-technical public.

There is also a very convenient MP comment that we are (implausibly) somehow OK while CO2 levels are below 400ppm. This is ofcourse just a very convenient round headline grabbing figure that conveniently pushes the problem away by another 11 years until after that MP retires.

And no politician will risk saying that we must restrict our energy rich lifestyles.

ENOUGH OF PROCRASTINATION:

Start building ITER (fusion power) NOW. Also push to exploit tidal turbines (x4 the power generation of wind turbines). Better energy use will help also.

Kick-ass with your respective Senator, MP, Politician, NOW.

There will likely be only a "Venus #2" when seti finally comes to visit...

Nope, we won't sign. Face it, with a couple of the major flaws in Kyoto, it is truely a meaningless piece of feel-good drivel. Fix the problems then it is a new game, but as it is now, why bother?

Hi,

The news that CO2 levels are likely to rise alarmingly high very soon has been published by the BBC news website.

Seems us CPDN crunchers are famous now.

Don't know if it'll mean that the yanks will at last take note and sign up for Kyoto.
