When the servers/shedulers are down it can displays this, they will return when the servers do.

I'm about to throw the towel in on Boinc -- it's beset with bugs, crashes, installation problems, operational problems.

This problem is my last straw -- so if anyone can help, I'd appreciate it. I've got it running on one PC instead of classic as a trial (my other two still run Classic). Boinc on my PC has received and returned nearly ONE DOZEN units. So far my credit remains at /0/ for Boinc after nearly two weeks. What is going on?

(my ID is http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/show_user.php?userid=154928)

You can post here or e-mail with help at darsys /at/ aol /dot/ com

It's really frustrating as I know two WU were lost due to the server crash. But I had sent one before and I've sent some since. And I can't even check if they're pending because that feature isn't working. However as much time as has passed I can't imagine that's the problem.

Sigh...Once again nobody is getting any Credit, and we haven't for the last 2-3 weeks either...Supposidly the WU's are being stored and in time the Credit will be Granted. When that will happen is anybodies guess, it may not be for a year the way things are running around here ... :/

The reason for currently not getting any credit is explained if you'll take a little look on the front-page, you'll see they've developed a new hierarchial directory structure. This is currently being alpha-tested, beta-tested next week (how, since "everyone" is either here or in other projects), and at last implemented here.
Only then it has been implemented here the next step comes into play:
"We also have a tool to distribute all recent results into the new hierarchy. When that tool is run, credit will appear for all of these results. The credit appearance will be spread over a number of days."

So you'll not get any credit till they've tested & de-bugged the new directory-hierarchy, so don't expect any credit before next week.

There are a few problems with BOINC but it is still too early to give up entirely. What you are seeing is post-beta, pre-live teething problems. In short, most of these issues did not surface during the beta test because they are of a nature where the would only show up with a larger user population.

Credit is 0 because the process for granting credit is more complex than a simple "yes you made a result". With any one of the background processing units off-line you will not see credit accumulate. In addition, you have to have 3 people return an "identical" result for you to see credit granted.

More details of the credit process can be found in my online documentation. Check first in the index on the word "credit" ...

The Pony Express union is on strike, and besides Berkeley has stated that they have no intention of providing feed for their delivery horses. So until this union issue is resolved, no mail will flow across the country. Your WU's are backing up in the backwater towns where the Pony Express cannot reach due to contractual obligations.

In other news...

Theres GOLD in California! Too bad nobody can get to it.

There are 2 other projects using BOINC now.

Predictor has been working pretty well on it...it's had a few days of no work but nothing approaching the magnitude of shortages and outages of seti@home on Boinc.

BOINC will be a good system for distributed computing....already it's got several other projects running it and there will be many more.

The BOINC software is being improved and upgraded along with the server software...given time it will run great and give even more freedom of choice and efficiency of processor use and hopefully even greater control over what we allow our computers to do with the work we have.

I think we would all have felt better if the results and pending pages had been enabled. In Beta, this was at least a 'comfort' when there were problems, to know exactly where you were at a point in time.

Now they are looking at a new hierarchical structure - not exactly innovative is it;) , which means the pages will not be active but I really would like to see them activated ASAP cos I've totally lost track of what I have and shouldn't have.

You will not see those pages anytime soon I am guessing. Since they both hit on the "Results" table and that is the table that has the greatest contention at this time ...

It may be possible in the near term for the pending if they peel that part off of the "Results" table and make it a separate table with just the WU IDs that you have pending. Although it may be that doing so will actually increase I/O.

I know that is one of the lacks and to the extent possible I try to aid in the understanding by posting here, answering e-mails (if you are embarassed to ask here), and in my documentation.

The difficulty is that this is not SETI II, it is a much more ambitious project than that. And I am not sure that the developers truly felt, deep in their hearts, that it was anything else besides SETI II.

The difficultites of striking the "right" balance between openess and communication is not going to be solved. In part, it is our fault as a community. When I did EverQuest it was a constant refrain by the public to have more insight, and when it was given, was almost always swamped by the negative posters. You can see the trend here too. Where nefarious motives are connected with all manner of things.

And if there is something you do not understand, ask about it (if you even have a mild interest) because there are several of us that love to answer questions. I will caution you though that you may get referred to my web site (click on my banner, or bookmark my pages) where there are lots of answers. And when I am told I did not explain it well ... I even go back and do better...

I had hoped to post my lecture series, but it looks like I am going to have to re-write them from the groud up because I cannot find a tool that will do a conversion from MS Word to something reasonable as a web page (all the conversion tools including MS for the PC/Mac and Apple works, and a couple others all make such a hash of it, it would be simpler for me to start over from scratch).
