Update: We got the new server yesterday, inserted our old disks and booted it up. It came right up, but verifying the file systems took overnight. The work is being created, the splitters and assimilators are working. It will be a while before we catch up. Thank you for your continued patience and support.

Update: Our science database server died on Tuesday, May 1st. We haven't been able to create new workunits since then (though we are still accepting completed results). Sun is graciously replacing this server. The bad news is, despite earlier claims, it won't be here until Friday the 11th, which means the earliest we'll be creating new work is Monday the 14th. Thank you for your continued patience! Updates, discussion, and more information about this and other server-related topics can be found in Technical News.

A further note for new Beta testers who have joined the program because of the shortage of mainstream SETI work.

As you may have noticed, the supply of Beta SETI Enhanced workunits has also dried up. That's not a problem - that's what they were there for. But the server status page says 0 ready to send, and apart from the occasional re-send, that's it: I think the Beta splitter relies on the same infrastructure as SETI main, so there will be no more Enhanced work until Thumper is resurrected. Even then, I expect the staff will want to get the main project up and running again first, before work starts flowing here again.

But that isn't quite the end of the story. SETI Beta is also in the very early stages of testing a completely different application called 'Astropulse'. Again, no Astropulse units have been split for quite a while, so most of you won't have seen one. But beware: they're massive (about a week to crunch on a moderately fast rig) - and the initial estimates are completely wrong (mine said 8 hours).

There are only 210 Astropulse WUs in ciculation (461051 - 461260 inclusive), but a lot of them are going to time-out and get reissued just after the weekend - 14 May 2007 23:59:55 UTC onwards. Please don't pick up one of these re-issues unless you're prepared to let it run for as long as it takes - with only 210 WUs available, every finished result is valuable to the programmers.

All of which is a long-winded way of saying:

Please set 'No New Work' now.

unless the bug has gripped you and you want to continue this beta-test adventure for the long term: in which case, welcome aboard.

And Thumper is back again, thanks to Jeff and Eric working hard in their spare time. Hopefully we'll soon be back to normal.

A huge thanks to Eric and Jeff for your efforts.

The kitties have received 5 Astropulse WUs to play with on the quaddy. The downloads are stalled out right now, but I think they'll come through as traffic permits. We shall see.

Don't mess with the kitties!!

Msattler, please keep yourself updated on the AstroPulse board, now you have decided to let the kitties play with the heavy toys.

There are some things to know about them, first thing is to monitor them very closely, like a mouse hole, which I hope the kitties are willing to, and then they need their good eyesight to watch, if an AP WU seems un-chewable, if there's any movements on the graphic to decide if they should spit it out or keep on with the chewing. And then, if they spit it out, they must be willing to let Josh and Eric get a meow or two about it.

And they can't have a big pile of toys, if Josh or Eric suddenly change the favorite color, it's a bad idea to have many yellow toys, when they say that only red toys are good. Yes, many things for the kitties to consider, I know, but they'll have fun knowing that they are tripping where no cat has set paws before. ;-D

Maybe your kitties even will start to like the playing with the heavy toys, it can be quite addictive, I tell ya! Even if there's no mouthwatering mousetasting treats to get from it. ;-D

Thumper (the master science database server) has been replaced and is up and running again.

There are huge problems with upload/download most probably because the servers are being clobbered with requests.

So please have patience. And please let your BOINC manager(s) do what they are made to, to contact when it's time. Please don't hit the Update button, your uploads/downloads will get through eventually.

Thank you.

If you have downloads queued for seti or seti beta use proxy 128.32.18.173, will not work for uploads but at least you can get some work done and waiting to return, (please turn it off when your downloads finished to allow others to use it)

I think we ought to be a bit cautious about the proxy. The IP address given resolves to galileo.SSL.Berkeley.EDU: a few days ago Tony (Astro) posted here:
they've blocked the galileo loophole. That addy went through the campus network which they paid dearly for(in cash). Not to mention that it'd do NO good this time as all outgoing work need to be written to thumper so it knows who's got what. there's no sneaking around this time.

It looks as if they unblocked the galileo loophole - deliberately or otherwise.

If what Tony says about the cost of the Campus network is still true, then anyone who used that proxy owes them (another) donation - and please make doubly sure that you remove the proxy information as soon as possible after use.

Thanks for that proxy #, Julian. It works.
Best wishes ;)

Matt has posted about the comm problem in his technical news forum today on the Main board, they are working on it and I suspect they will make some progress on it tomorrow.

So it seems that they are making progress now. :-D

Intermittent here.
Have downloaded WUs from both SETI projects, but upload took a day or two to sort out. Unable to report Beta WUs when finished, atm.

The Cricket graph shows that something crumped about 4 hours ago. I'd guess when they arrive at the lab in a couple of hours that will be corrected.
