Do you want to own a piece of SETI and help the cause? Visit the SETI@home Store.

Misfit, is it normal to charge so much in shipping from these stores?

The pen I bought yesterday to the winner of the Rushmas competition was charged with 20 $ in shipping, and I think this is quite steep. It was a pen after all, not one of the glass paper weights!

So I wonder how much the project actually gets from the sale, and how attractive the buying's are when they charge that much for shipping. I'll take this up in the donation team.

It would be if it was shipped to you. It's either next day or two day air. There is no ground shipping over an ocean. :)

It was sent as an international parcel, the cheapest way. The same way as when I send a package to USA.

Evening Everyone

This will teach me to go take care of My Wife During Surgery... Many things are/have happened and I am so far behind that it will take until next week to catchup...

[2 Jan 2007 1:00:00 UTC] $85437.82 or 15.9% of the Goal. All of this in a little over 4 weeks.

Nov and Dec Raised $85142.82 or about 15.8% of the Goal or operations into Mar. Eric had stated that a new application needs to be compiled to have MultiBeam in Seti Main (or run out of things to crunch). Astropulse should be ready for testing here in the next few weeks.

Eric posted
Possible PayPal Solutions

I guess it'll be a race between this and getting our own non-profit corporation set up.

Eric

We are currently experiencing database performance problems. This is resulting in erratic workunit downloads.

Matt had previously stated that the "Web Server is experiencing issues," and hopefully they will not cost money. It hardwarewise is very ancient...

If we believe BoincStats

Seti
Users 582,195 Total 189,601 Active
Hosts 1,274,260 Total 328,007 Active
Teams 45,888 Total 21,308 Active
Countries 230 Total 208 Active

Seti Beta
Users 3,035 Total 1,257 Active
Hosts 6,947 Total 2,271 Active
Teams 450 Total 240 Active
Countries 80 Total 58 Active

Or roughly 190000 Active Users... So those that have donated are even more Important.

I wish You all the Best of the New Year, I feel Good Things will Continue to Happen!

Thank You Everyone, I have not been beating up the Forums

Nov and Dec have brought in $88142.82. Including Jan $89317.82 or 16% of the Goal right now we are on a coast and rebuild mode and working on Information, PayPal, the Seti Non Profit Organization setup, MultiBeam to Seti Main before there are no more workunits to Crunch, Astropulse to Beta... This does not mention Eric is working on the Application that will need to be complied (it will be faster) to allow MultiBeam to move to Seti Main. And the Web Server is getting ready to collapse.

Many things are happening in the background and if you look at your account you will see rough numbers of the various projects that you have running "Statistics." Work on the BOINC Core to get it ready for All Boinc Projects

So as information about problems with getting donations to Seti was posted and the responses are looked at... Then ways to overcome those issues non technical and technical are being looked at.

I will note that some people that have donated a year ago or longer now no longer have a star. Yes people can turn them on or off (preferences) it is their choice...

I know that several people have volunteered to act as a PayPal Agent in the short term. There is discussion about how to accomplish that without creating mis-trust. Currently it will have to filter through UCB to get the Funds to Seti.

SO it boils down to If You Can and When You Can Donations are needed. If you can not, I and Seti Understand, there are times in everyones Life they wish they Could but reality bites.

So I will not disturb you for a couple more days. Seti Staff is working to get MultiBeam and the Seti Application ready for Seti Main.

Morning Everyone

As Kate is back in the Hospital I am sacrificing more sleep time.

Eric's Response to Why I cannot Donate Technical

Many have wondered why I have said things, there was no word from Eric or anyone at Seti. Well I was told things that were in confidence and went to work on Donations. Many ignore me as I keep posting the "same Cr@p about Donations." Sorry, but I have invested a lot of Time, Computer Time, Effort and Helping others with Seti. It is something that I believe in.

Many of you are buying New Computers so that you can do More Faster and Beat Out the other Person. Seti has had the most stable and consistent source of credit/hour. However, with the Thousands that you are spending on new computers and then can not find a reason for a small Donation. It makes No Sense!

At this point "You Need" go take a few minutes to read... Then decide, if You have the means to do something positive and then turn your head it is then on YOU!... Otherwise, I can recommend a couple of BOINC Projects that will also lower Your/Your Teams RAC... Many projects post items to make the "User Feel Good," whether it actually means anything is impossible to tell... One thing that is always stated is OUR DATABASE is Continuing to Grow! They keep Creating More work for You to do... Have they Solved Cancer or many of the other Diseases? They keep trying, they post "Eye Candy" and have money and resources to do good Public Relations. As I looked at many BOINC Projects impossible for me to tell about the true progress, it was ALL Public Relations...

At this point I feel that Seti the Founder of BOINC is the most honest. We know what is preventing progress...

If you do not have the means to help right, Seti Understands...

Regards

Pappa

Somehow I'm thinking about the idea to have "shared threads", visible from multiple boards - here Science, N.C. and Cafe...

Evening Everyone

[10 Jan 2007 21:44:48 UTC] the Current Totals since the fund drive started are $106629.92 19.8% of the Goal The interesting part is that at least one individual donated $10,000.00 Today 16 people have given $18939.00 including a 10,000 donation. Helping to get the word out to the roughly 190000 Seti Users is important...

I know that everyone would like to see more information, Tuesday I was fortunate enough to have Coffee with Eric in Seattle (Eric was attending a convention up here). As he is flying out of the Cold (up here) should be back to California this evening. Over the next couple of days you should be seeing some information about MultiBeam and plans for the migration to Seti Main.

Thank You

Evening Everyone

[18 Jan 2007 2:20:01 UTC] during the last few days the Total has grown to $108685.92 or 20.2% of the goal. Currently Eric and Matt are fighting to get a replacement server for kryten which is causing issues with uploads/downloads and result validation. What is need is a dual opteron with at least 8gig of RAM...

Your consideration for a donation would be appreciated...

Thank You

Pappa

Donate Hardware

For most Users that are not Technophiles or Administrators this gets a bit tough in a hurry... It does give you and idea of some of the complexities you avoid when you call you local or major computer dealer and say "I want a computer." For most Users it becomes simplier to spend a few minutes to Donate and let Seti sort it out...

In the background I have a "partial" list of items needed (that I can share). I am sure that someone might have one or two used items laying around collecting dust. What is needed is to replace actually three servers. The hardest being kryten and it handles Uploads/Downloads and other processes. The information I have is that it should be at least 2.6Ghz H/T Intel Xeon with 6gig of minimum... and needs to be able to handle a fiberchannel card (PCI or PCI-E existing drives). If a stornger server for klaatu or koloth can be built then some process might be able to migrated that would ease some of the other issues that have recently plauged Seti...

Now, It gets tougher as a Server Boards are optimized hardware wise to handle all the stuff that never gets in the way of a User on a Workstation... Silly things Input/Output wise, like network connections, drive mappings, and handing processes to the CPU(s),

* klaatu: Sun D220R (2 x 440MHz Sparc, 2 GB RAM)
* koloth: Sun D220R (2 x 440MHz Sparc, 1 GB RAM)
* kryten: Sun E3500 (6 x 400MHz Sparc, 6 GB RAM)

One at a time, minimum requirements..
* klaatu - a P4 2 Ghz (H/T) Xeon Processer with 2 gig of RAM...
* koloth - a P4 2 Ghz (H/T) Xeon Processer with 2 gig of RAM...
* kryten - Dual P4 2.6 (Intel) Xeon Processer with 6 gig of
RAM... Or Dual Operton 2.4 (Model 250, 1 meg L2) with 6 gig of RAM expandable.

To an extent, newer 64bit Processers and Motherboards are needed (for the future)...

1. We have found an Intel Server board (SE7500WV2) that is a socket 603 that will support up to (2) 2.8 GHZ Xeons. What are need is two CPU's of the same speed. Intel Part Numbers

2.8 Ghz BX80532KC2800DU 1 rack unit size
2.8 Ghz BX80532KC2800D Full height
2.6 Ghz BX80532KC2600D Full height
2.6 Ghz BX80532KC2600DU 1 rack unit size

2. RAM it gets a bit tougher in that most servers run what is call ECC (error correction) and Registered... It has conflicting information about the system board in that it would handle up to 12 gig of RAM... It this is truly the case it could build a machine that could replace kryten and have room to grow a bit.

Kingston Value RAM for the board 1 gig sticks...
Kingston ECC, Reg 1gig

3. That last things that I will let "slip" is drives to expand for what is need in the not too far near future. These would be Sata II drives to fill where Uploads/Downloads need to happen... The need is for at least 6 to 8 of the same brand and size... If I were to go look at what I would buy on the the open market which gave the best value... I come up with this for an idea.

What I would pick at this point would be Western Digital Sata II... Or if you want a specific link...

Sata II 8mb buffer 160gig Those are about $51.xx each...

or

Sata II 8mb buffer 200gig those are about $70.xx each...

Please Note:
This does not recomend that this Company that sells them only this price... You could go to your local computer store and purchase a new one that will do fine... Or there are many sites that you can get comparible deals. Now how to coordinate all this? Hmmmmmm

Many could say would they are not a "Raptor"... For most this is not a concern, in an array activity is spread across many spindles not a single drive thus throughput does not become an issue...

IF You can help with Hardware, once again I give my email address to help sort what and where... al.setiboinc (at) gmail.com replace the (at) with the @ symbol or Shift and the number 2

As of [9 Feb 2007 23:49:04 UTC] $163069.92 or 30.2% of the Goal has been Raised. As You can see that is almost 1/3rd of the Goal in a little over 2 months. Simon has completed the Seti PayPal Gateway that allows those previously wishing for it the chance to help. If you enter your Account Number (found towards the bottom of your account page) You can also have a green star... If you desire to make unvisible you can turn it off also from the account page.

Team Founders/Captains Please take time to let your Team Members Know. Team Members you might need to let You Team Founder/Captains know that the PayPal Gateway is ready.

With replacement hardware needed for kryten, klaatu and koloth every bit helps. There is a need for cash that can Help move the servers slightly ahead. When MultiBeam hits Seti main here in the next few weeks what is "bad now" will be "worse" without help...

Thank You for You Help and Consideration

Pappa

Notes:
* Eric has Complete Access to the Account.
* What goes into the account comes to Seti.

Maybe its more useful to take the next $2000 or whatever it costs from donation to replace Kryten.

We can direct the donations to this.

Only an idea.

Evening All

The Truth is Seti needs Money and Hardware! That is the bottom line... I know that many would if they could, and the PayPal Issue has been solved in the short term...

This keeps getting tougher as many do not want to hear the Truth! Many do not know or watch! Seti BOINC may just disappear. If you talk about this to Friends and Team Mates then that could be more important! The More people that are working to solve the money crunch the better... It can be accomplished!

To an extent I have became unpopular because I say Seti needs money... Many people are saying the same thing, but because of one name or two or three they are ignored... Hardware is Needed, You can look at the Donate Hardware II

The Message is that the Survival of Seti is in Your Hands! It is up to You! I and others have spent many hours trying to convey what is happening and to get funds to the Seti project. More than that we can not do... That is for You to decide, I and others hope you decide Yes!

Please consider a Donation or You have a PayPal Account or area server administrator Donate Hardware II

I am only the messenger...

I want to extend My Personal Thank You, to Everyone that has found some way to find a few dollars to Help Seti Survive. When You Can it is Still Needed!

As of [20 Feb 2007 4:02:52 UTC] $164493.13 has been raised or 30.6% We have seen vaious pieces of hardware show up and Seti and a few items still outstanding. I will update what Information I have in the next couple of days.

There are several ways to Help a Donation or via PayPal or Donate Hardware II

One thing that is still needed for the kryten replacment is 6-8 Sata II drives

I have some things that are keeping me very occupied. So if anyone would love to Wrestle a Dragon or Two, you are welcome to Ask. No these are no the Standard Dragons...

In the mean time, "we" can only be patient as Eric, Matt and Crew are working on issues that affect not only Seti, Einstein and all BOINC Projects

Morning Everyone

One of the drive types that are needed to get Storage up to snuff for the UpComing transfer of Multibeam Workunits is:

73GB 10K U160 80P 16MB ST373405LCV yes these are becoming obsolete and harder to find...

We need 8 of them!

IF you can afford one of these and want to ship directly to UCB, then please conctact me... I can give You the shipping address.
