But I thought I would like to post it here also:

I would to very interested to know -- your opinions and critisisms

i know this subject has been disscussed before in other theads .... but Dr Seth Shostak of the Seti institude brings up some new ideas in his recent article.

When talk turns to SETI, there’s one question that’s as common as catfish: "We’re not broadcasting to the aliens; so what makes you think they’ll be broadcasting to us?"

This may strike the innocent mind as a good point. But then again, hanging out in a bar all night without uttering a word hardly ensures that I won’t hear conversation. When it comes to interstellar communication, our muteness has nothing to do with theirs, except insofar as our motives for not broadcasting may be widely shared.

I saw this writen somewhere ... can't remember where .... but the fowlling sums my thoughts on the subject

" As far as a beacon goes , heck yes , let's set something up that's unmistakeable. Let's put up a whopping huge transmitter - solar powered on the far side of the moon , so it won't interfer with our communications , make it automated and build it to last thousands of years , turn it on and leave it alone "

I would to very interested to know ------

what do you think ? ..... your thoughts ? .... your ideas ? ......... your opions ? .... your counter arguments ? ........ your critisisums ?

Hi Byron. I think the US Department Of Defense would not be very happy with this type of galactic advertizing. I mean, what if some infinitely more intelligent race recieves the message? What are they going to do? If their intelligence is anything like ours I am not very optimistic! The point I am trying to make is, we should take this factor into account before we are going to give away our position in the universe.

Greetings, Abraxas.

That is assuming that we are currently unknown to the alien race. Whose to say, they might already know we are here, but that we are of such insigificance to them they don't worry about us. To them, we could be like the ant in the grass. I know they are there, but I don't care. I don't go out of my way to stomp on them. They are of no significance to me.

Also, the article was more of an argument to keep listening rather than an argument for or against transmitting. The author was simply stating that our reasons for not transmitting are strictly personal to the human race. Our reasons are not necesarily thier reasons for or against transmitting.

Its a very wise and clever person that listens to what is going on before
before he starts to speek.
