Today I finally retired and scrapped my Atom/ION computer. It slowly but steadily deteriorated until in was more or less unusable. It begun a couple of weeks ago, when it from time to time just froze. Only way to get it running again was to force a reboot with the power button. I suspected the PSU was slowly getting worse and worse dropping the voltage more and more, so I stopped using the ION GPU for crunching, and only used the Atom CPU for SETI main and SETI Beta. That worked fine until yesterday when it froze stiff from only CPU crunching. I thought it might have been a freak incident, but after a reboot, it only lasted a couple of minutes before it froze again. Tested 10 times, with the same result.

Checked with a couple of test programs, and the voltage seemed a bit low, as I suspected, but to be sure that it wasn't something else, I disassembled the entire computer including the memory chips, put it back together and tried again. Same result, it only lasted a couple of minutes before it froze.

Anyhow, it was a Point of View Mobii Nettop, and the PSU was of a small type that wouldn't be easy or cheap to find. This computer was bought mostly so I could for a relatively small amount of money start learning about CUDA GPU crunching. It wasn't fast, it only produced at best a RAC of about 1500 or so, maybe 1700 with the old credit system.

I managed to abort all tasks here on Beta, but unfortunately on main there is 102 tasks that wasn't on my computer (lost tasks that would have been resent if the little beast hadn't expired). They will time out in due time, so no harm done, except that they will have to be resent to another computer.

It was a fun little computer.

Rest in peace (or pieces) dear Atom/ION.

Poor thing... She was my muse and mentor rolled into one.
I'm sure she served you well.
(just so nothing gets lost in translation, that's not the same idiom as 'it serves you well')

Came over to Beta to see if anyone's here while the outage/rollover is going on... I guess the gurus are busy with more important things right now.

Yes, she served me well. It was a fun little computer to start learning CUDA crunching with.

(Don't worry about the idioms. I'm pretty good at both English and American idioms.)
