Sign outside Coober Pedy - South Australia, Australia

Coober Pedy is the opal capital of the world.
About 85% of the world's opals come from this area.
The name means "White man's hole" when translated literally.
The miners dig holes in the soft stone and live in the resulting caves which provide cool shelter from the burning sun.
There is no "opal industry", but thousands of individual mines run by a few persons each.
