Galaxy Formation: Problems

• PROBLEMS:

  • Some of oldest stars in bulge (center) not halo
  • Younger globular clusters seem to be farther out in halo than older ones
  • Where are first stars with no heavy elements?

• SOLUTION?:

  • Throw out theory altogether? Not unless you’ve got a better one!
  • Modify it or add to it!
  • MERGER: Our galaxy captured one or more small satellite galaxies (OH)
