| Personal background |
I'm 19 with a P4 at 1.8 GHz and an AMD at 1.2 GHz networked with an X-Box (you can play Halo using GameSpy, albiet difficult to set up the first time). Currently I'm going to Shoreline Community College in Seattle for a major in computers with asperations of university credentials. I have a dog named Fritz, live with my mom, dad, and brother, have a girlfriend, and live with my uncle durring the week days because he's closer to the campus. I've also been unemployed since December 2001 and spend most of my time with various media and my computers (i.e. burning thousands family photos onto CDs, condensing several CDs into single MP3 CDs, and digital video editing of old family movies so when I get that Pioneer DVD burner I can put them on there).
This picture of me was taken at 12:00 tonight, I'm tired and held the camera myself. I should have a better picture up, but I don't know when I'll stop procrastinating. |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I do belive extraterrestrial life exists, and I belive it could be as near as Europa (one of Jupiter's moons; it's ice covered, but could have liquid water beneath and volcanic activaty). I think Star Trek has its hopes up a little too high, but that's the appeal of the series, the humor helps too. I have high hopes that we'll have indisputable evidence of alien life in the next hundred years (although many will dispute it, like Contact), and the benefits/dangers would likely also mirror that of Contact. Religous fanatics would probably be the biggest threat (but I'm assuming Independance Day is just a movie), and Star Trek would be the greatest benefit (I'm biased).
If we were to transmit a signal, we should do it right. Two beacons on either side of the galaxy and four rotating around the edge, sending the same signals on different frequencies (equally spaced) in all directions, by the same token, they should also be recivers. Hopefully the Vulcans won't wait until we have warp drive for first contact. The signal should be a varity of simple and complex signals, repeating itself once every five minutes and then music or something new for the next four minutes or so.
I run SETI@home for braging rights, to be a part of something bigger than myself, to contribute to the greater good, and to have something to care for(like a plant) but not be afraid that it will die on me (like a plant). Also, I don't want all that power going to waste and to have something that doesn't just repeat the same old thing over and over (like defragmenting or scan disk, anti-virus is different though due to the constant updates). |
