Personal background
I'm a computer scientist in my thirties crunching for SETI with my Macintoshes since 2005, when I "switched" to the Mac.

Lot's of sci-fi novels read, the movies, and all the stuff you need to go through to become what you could call "a little bit of a nerd"...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Why SETI? Well, here's my somewhat a little bit philosophical answer: I do not think that our chances are high to find something significant. I am pretty sure that other lifeforms have evolved out there. And it is not unlikely at all that they also have evolved intelligence. The odds are pretty bad, however, that we will detect them using SETI right now. It has taken us millions of years to get to the point where we are now (which would make us detectable by ET using the SETI approach). All assupmtions for SETI are safe as of today, but I am quite sure that in a thousand years from now, all of our technologies will have changed completely from what we are using today (note: I have no idea what they might look like - would you have imagined something like a computer if you lived only 100 years ago?).

So the key question would be: will the SETI approach detect something from a civilization "only" 1000 years apart from our present state? I am afraid that it's pretty unlikely. But, since today we do not have any alternatives, why not help the project anyway? There's so much in life that would have never happened if you had not tried something in the first place...
