Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
1., Depends how you define life, but basically yes. The
trouble is the current thinking is it has to be biologically similar to Earth life, i.e.,
DNA based or water based. There is no rational reason for that. The trouble is that Star
Trek et al., have us all looking for life like us. About 6ft, males and females that mate
etc., may be a different nucleotide structure or something. However, really, the nature of
extraterrestrial life is likely to be so surprising to us that we wouldnt notice it
even if we saw it. NASAs life on Mars probes probably wouldnt recognise life
if they were bitten on the proverbial nose by it!
Benefits? Hmmm. Better SciFi? Dangers, to them: Wed destroy them unless they were
very similar to ourselves, and talked English fluently. To us, well I daresay that even if
they recognised us as a life form they probably would treat us with all the respect we
treat bacteria, ants, sheep, grass or even other people who are not quite like ourselves.
2., Should we transmit? Probably not, but hey, its fun! We are anyway arent we,
through radio and TV etc?
3., Enjoy the computer working away really hard whilst I just sit and watch! Appeals to
some funny, screwy laziness gene, I think!
