Personal background
I am from West Bend Wisconsin, 40 years old. My occupation is a Radio Frequency technician and am a licensed Ham radio operator, call sign KB9WNS.
As my interests and occupation relate to radio, I have found interest in the SETI at Home program. It is the ultimate DX challenge.
My computer hardware includes 1 homebuilt 400 Mhz Pentium II with 128 Meg of ram and Windows 98, 1 ALDI ( yes, the discount grocery store )
2.66 Ghz with 256 meg DDR ram and 533 frontside bus with Windows XP, networked thru a firewall serviced by a cable modem. An AMD athlon 3700 with 1 gig of ram was recently aquired. The Aldi machine developed motherboard issues. Additional hardware include a variety of radios, lots of antennas, etc.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. yes, by accident, probally by the same way the Bell Labs engineers discovered the backround microwave radiation while trying to improve the telephone system. I would not be the least suprised if some cellular company stumbles upon some strange signal while installing or testing the towers, etc.
I would doubt if any real dangers exist. Any violent society is more than likely will destroy itself before it gets a chance for long distance space flight ( or destroy itself on such a mission ).

2. Yes. any information sent should be simple but obviously artifical. This should include chirp patterns to allow for doppler shift.

3. As a ham radio operator, I have an interest in the ultimate DX contest. My initial reason for joining the project were comments about the antennas on top of my truck such as \\\\\\\\\\\\\\"what are all those antennas for\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" or \\\\\\\\\\\\\\"searching for aliens\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" the \\\\\\\\\\\\\\"searching for aliens\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" and similar comments prompted me to do some internet searching for extraterrestial intelligence programs and I found SETI at Home.

Great project, finding \\\\\\\\\\\\\\"ET\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" will have a good impact on science and technology
maybe even society. Could even answer some very basic questions of the origins of civilization and where we are going.
