Profile: Eric Johannson

Personal background
I am originally from Quebec (that province of Canada where the complainers live), but these days I live in Southampton, Ontario. I currently work at the Quality Inn as an 'as needed' employee [not full-time nor part-time]. My current goal is to learn more about Python & PHP and get back into the computer field.

I am a fan of Star Trek & Calvin (and Hobbes), enjoy playing computer games. I had a large book collection (lots of SciFi and fantasy), most of which was given away when I moved to Canada. I run the SETI @ home program so that my computer is put to some productive use (and not strictly used for surfing the web and playing games).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
"Why do I run SET@home?"
I think that there must be life out there SOMEWHERE. ("...otherwise, it would be a waste of space" paraphrased from 'CONTACT'.) I think two important questions are: "Will humans be around long enough?" and "Will we recognize it when we do?".
Possible benefit: Humans might actually "put their house in order" - in other words, start acting as civilized as we claim to be.
Possible danger: The kook factor in the population would go ballistic and take the rest of the planet with them (ie - end of life on the planet as another extreme example).

"What are your views about the project?"
I think that it is perfectly acceptable for a beacon to be constructed with the idea of contacting alien civilizations. The information to be broadcast should simply introduce us as we are. That way, any civilisation who receives this information will not be disappointed when/if they get here.

"Any suggestions? Random thoughts?"
I contribute use of my computer to the SETI project despite the fact that one day, a signal might actually be detected. But, there are some surprises that I could live without (i.e. finding out what would happen to Earth should intelligent life be found elsewhere).
