Personal background
I'm 20 years young, majoring in mathematics, and transferring from a local community college to UCR in the fall. Unfortunately, I'm not really sure what I should do with being a math major, I've been in education for a little bit, and while I may enjoy it and see the service in it, I'm always interested by science, and math just seems to be such a great tool in that area.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1.) Find aliens.
2.) It's a great way to connect people to the "cutting-edge" of discoveries and research and science, and just make people feel as though they're somehow contributing.
3.) How do we know all this processing power is actually productive? I can sit there and watch it "compute Fourier transforms" and the like for days, and know that it's doing something, but in the end it's all left to the programmers to make sure this is really productive, that we're actually making progress. And as far as I know, it could just as easily not be.
