Personal background
My name is Jake and I am a web designer based in London UK.

At the age of 16 I left school and studied ICT at college. Once I had my diploma, I started working for a company in London, and eventually started my own web design company (www.webarchetype.com)

Following a 'wake-up call' in October 2011 - I realised that leaving school to study ICT at college may have been a mistake; walking away from school meant leaving Physics behind as well. Since leaving school, I have continued to educate myself in various aspects of Cosmology and general Physics by following the work of Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawkins and other various pioneers in the field of Physics and specifically Cosmology.

In January of this year, I decided to begin private tuition in A level Physics and Maths. I am due to sit my first round of exams next month (May 2012). I intend to continue my learning and sit my final round of exams in January 2013.

Once I am qualified, I hope to be offered the opportunity to study Physics to MSci level (and maybe beyond!) at Cambridge University here in the UK. Following that I would like to study Cosmology at a much more in-depth level, focusing on the evolution of life throughout the Cosmos.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@home for many reasons, but I guess the most important are as follows:

1) as a web designer I have a high spec computer that is often not being used to its full potential. I cannot think of a better effort to offer my processing power towards.

2) I strongly believe that finding extraterrestrial life/intelligence in the cosmos will greatly benefit the human race in many different ways, including the opening of doors for our Biologists.

3) Studying Cosmology is a humbling affair. I feel that the most significant thing I can do with my life is to study the mysteries of the Cosmos and maybe answer some fundamental questions along the way.

4) Finding extraterrestrial intelligence may well mean that our own civilisation is not doomed.

My views on SETI are similar to that of Carl Sagan's views. I am driven by the big questions, and the answers are all out there in the vast darkness.

Suggestions? I think that SETI has a wonderful community of dedicated and inquisitive people, however there is still a vast amount of processing power that could be tapped into if other people were educated on the Cosmos and the importance of SETI. I think there should be more sponsorship for media and global promotion of SETI.
