Profile: The Spacefaring Ent

Personal background
Hi there. My name is James. I live in North Carolina, USA, but I am currently a student at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. I am not sure what I will major in, but it will probably be Electrical Engineering. I am a huge space buff, and am watching NASA very closely. I am disappointed with much of thier recent activity, but believe that they can improve. I am also a believer in the necessity of a Humans to Mars program. Check out the Mars Society website if you have not seen it, and the book, The Case for Mars if you have not read it.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I think that extraterrestrial life does exist, but I think it so far away that we will not be able to have a coherent conversation with them until our society develops into a more stable, interplanetary society. We may discover them tomorrow, but actually talking to them will be the hard part. I really think that the primary danger of contact is the culture shock, and the realization that we are not the top dogs of the galactic neighborhood.

2. Humans have been transmitting beacons since the invention of television and radio. My main worry is that everything that we send is full of violence and destruction (think of science fiction movies as ironic), and extraterrestrials may not want to associate with us. Worst case scenario - they decide that we cannot continue our violent ways, and exterminate us. Any information that we deliberatly send should be scientific and non-violent.

3. At first, I ran SETI@home for the screensaver for the pretty graphics, but it kept screwing up, and I wanted to process WUs faster. Now I run the CLI client. I doubt that SETI@home will find a signal soon, but the work done is impressive in demonstrating the capabilities of distributed computing. I am looking forward to SETI@home 2 and BOINC. My suggestion - keep crunching!
