Personal background
Born in Lewisham (London - UK), February 28 1979. Currently living in small town called Heanor in Derbyshire (Central UK). Achieved a First Class degree in Computer Studies and am working for HSBC in developing call centre systems, mainly automated dialler systems.
Enjoy most SCI-FI, Babylon 5 being the best series I have ever seen with the best characters and story, also like The Outer Limits for the thoughts it provokes.
One of my main philosophies in life is to try to reduce the affect my life has on other people as the time we have in the many phases of our lives is relatively short and the impacts we can have intentional or unintentional are not always appreciated. As such I always consider how my actions and the full consequences of my actions affect other people’s lives before I make a decision.
Another one is to try to view scenarios and situations from a neutral perspective and not to judge immediately from out own limited perspective. We must try to put ourselves in other people’s shoes to appreciate the way they tick and why. Understanding the life people have lead allows us to get along and after all we are existing together and building the future for each other to live in.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I have no doubt there are living organisms elsewhere in the Universe, its just a matter of finding them. Finding a type of bacteria on another planet or asteroid would not make much difference to us after the initial hoo-hah (unless it was deadly and we brought it back Earth....). If we met a race which we could communicate with I think we could be in big trouble depending on what they want as their technology level would be significantly above ours to the point where they could pretty much do what they want and we either wouldn't know or wouldn't be able to do anything about it.
2. It’s a tricky one as who knows what kind of races could be lurking out there. I have read articles that say any space faring races would have to be peaceful. I haven't done the analysis they have but I would say that there could be race that might not think twice about wiping us out because they might think totally different than us. We may mean nothing to them and they believe for whatever reason they only have the right to exist (might sound a bit SCI-FI but I can’t see why it could not be the case). I think we should sort ourselves out first so that we are in a comfortable position in terms of society and technology before we advertise our planet.
3. I started running SETI as a result of my cousin in order to try in beating him at how many units I could process. I am now just processing as many as I can as I would be interested to find some extraterrestrial life before I cease to exist. It is a worthwhile project and worth an amount of effort but must be balanced with effort of more immediately beneficial areas such cancer research and the like. No suggestions at this time.
