Profile: BPA Thoonen

Personal background
I am a Dutch GP involved in scientific research. Computers, music and reading are my main hobbies. I am a father of four children of whom three are triplets. A suprise from mother nature, showing that terrestrial life can be just as unpredictable as extraterrestrial life!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I became interested in the SETI@home project when I saw a documentary on TV. My main motivations to participate in this project are the concept of sharing my unused computer time to other scientists and my own curiosity about the question if 'we are alone' or not. Or in the words of Carl Sagan (cited in the movie 'Contact') "If it's just us,....that would be an awful waste of space"
So I do think (hope) extraterrestrial life exists. It will be one of the major challenges for mankind to find other life forms. I wonder what will happen if we encounter an intelligent life form. I think it will also be a confrontation with ourselves and the things we do with our own planet and its inhabitants. Although maybe a little premature, it would do no harm to mankind to start thinking about these issues in this perspective. It is just what makes projects like seti@home more than 'science fiction' and 'useless listening to static'

So keep up the work and the antenna!
