Profile: Trapdoor

Personal background
I'm 26 y.o. a post graduate student, studdying a PhD in Chemical Engineering, at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

I help run a ski lodge, called trapdoor, and skiing is my major winter activity!

YES there is snow in Australia!

During the summer months I like to go fishing, diving and surfing.

I'm also closely involved in motorsport, working as an offical at various events around Australia!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes I think that life does exist elsewhere, I find it hard to believe that in such a vast universe, we would be the only ones.
There are some great benefits to such a discovery, the possible opening of new research avenues, new cultures and knowledge to absorb.
On the other hand, there could be the danger that some in the community may see such a discovery as a personal affront to their religion, or it may generate panic.

I don't really think we should broadcast a beacon just yet. Mankind is still infantile, and the broadcasting of a message could make us sound like a screaming baby, ripe for the picking!

I run seti@Home, as I have some very powerful computers at my disposal, which can be idle for days on end.
I see the project not only as worthwile, but also as a good example of how the internet can be used to gather people- from all over the world- to work together.
This, I believe, is the greatest benefit of the seti project.
