Personal background
Hi! My name is Michael Orley, aka the Galactic Watch Commander!

I'm 65 years old, from Chino Valley, Arizona, and am a retired teacher with a lively curiosity about.....everything!! I have a B.A. from Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida in Humanities, but have taught History (ancient and medieval) as well as modern. An avid reader, I read and speak Classical Latin and enjoy classical literature.

I'm happily married to the same wonderful lady, Sharon, of 33 years and love the outdoors, camping, fishing motorcycle riding and being with friends.

Joining the seti@home Project has been one of the most interesting experiences in my life!

Originally an Amateur Astronomer, I've worked with the U.S. naval Observatory's Project Grazing Occultation Program in the 70's and 80's.

In addition, I'm an active Shortwave Listener, and have gotten back into" the game" after a 40 year absence. My specialty is Numbers Stations. So, for me, the Seti Project has to be the biggest Signals Intelligence Show on Earth !!

I look forward to meeting and e-mailing others at seti@home (including ET of course ) and working with you all !!

Best Wishes to You all !!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1.I have always been convinced that "We are not alone." Even as a child, listening to short wave radio, I've had the conviction that others were likely to attempt to contact us. Through early attempts by Frank Drake of Project Ozma to the current seti@home projects, I've felt that we will ultimately make contact.

My ability to contribute to this project is important to me, because I think that many others, like myself, who participate are in a way seeking to"reach out and touch someone."

2. My views on the project are very enthusiastic!! I was very pleased that Jodie Foster felt led to contribute to the Seti Program and can only hope that there will be more collateral projects of this nature to participate in.

3. Suggestions? I think you are going in some very good directions, with taking seti to Face Book and Twitter. Carl Sagan used the same type of vehicle in the 80's to popularize science and present it to an intelligent, informed public and seti can achieve the same ends, using the same principles.

You might consider the efficacy of running a seti-based Group on Yahoo, or Google to stimulate further interest. Moreover, by contacting and recruiting amateur radio operators and Short Wave Listeners, you will be bringing on board, an even greater amount of committed, technically-oriented members.
