Personal background
OK, so I'm 40 years old, going on 12, an archaeologist and a scuba diver - a sort of "Indianna Cousteau" if you will.

Sadly, underwater archaeology doesn't pay very much in the UK (does it anywhere?) so I have to work at the day job as an IT professional to pay the bills. Some days my life has more than a passing resemblance to a Dilbert cartoon!

I've been fascinated by space exploration since staying up to watch Neil take that historic first "small step for [a] man" in 1969...

I have been asked about the photo. It was taken on the palaeo-foreshore of the river Thames in London. It would have been underwater, but we were about 1500 years late....
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does extraterrestrial life exist? I have no idea! It's true that there's no evidence for it - but absence of evidence is not evidence for absence. [Every archaeologist should have that tattooed on the inside of their eyelids!]
However, if I had to choose then I would say probably not - although that's no reason not to look.

Should we transmit a beacon? I am not sure.
Would it have been a good idea for the pre-Columbian Americans to transmit a beacon to Europe saying "here we are". Somehow I doubt it!
Worryingly, all the junk TV we broadcast into space will probably scare intelligent life away anyway.

Why run the client? Curiosity, plain and simple - it's a characteristic of our species. I've recently passed 30000 units on Seti Classic and I'm still going strong, so it obviously works for me.
