Profile: Vivienne D'Avalon

Personal background
I'm a Hunter grad, class of '92 with a BA in Music, Theater and the Honors Program (yes, triple major, plus a minor in classics. Or Professor Green. They were 75% the same thing). :) I also have a friend who was in college with me who has recently gone back to school to finish her degree, so she is currently studying Sociology at Hunter and plans to go on to get a Master's.
I also have a BA in anthropology from Rollins college here in Florida, where I now live and have lived since October of '99. I live with my sister, who is 53 but just recently went back to school herself to earn her college degree (w00t!) and my niece, who is in high school. My sister is becoming a software engineer, and my niece is in the local magnet school engineering program. Her older sister is in college and attends a school that combines 3 mos of internship with on the job training and 3 months of schooling, also to become an engineer. She recently was working for the military, helping design armor for vehicles being used by the troops in the middle east. Her main interest is optics. My younger niece got hit by the NASA bug when we took her over to Cape Canaveral when she and her Mom first moved in with me, and wants to be an astronaut as well as an engineer. My Dad, about to turn 83, has been an engineer all his life. He worked on making color television a reality, and also worked on the human genome project, and many other important and fascinating projects in between. Me, I make my living as a legal secretary -- which doesn't sound too exciting, but it gives me lots of time and opportunity to be an autodidact, and freely explore all the subjects that interest me at my own whim, rather than being pigeonholed into one discipline all the time. For example, I acted on Off-Off Broadway for many years while I lived in NYC, and was an extra in a couple of films and starred in some student films. I also belonged to the MSR and SCA, medieval recreation groups, where I learned a lot and had the opportunity to educate the public, all while having a blast! It also gives me the money to be able to put a roof over my sister and niece's heads while they are in school, for which I am grateful. One of my favorite books is "The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene. I just recently sent a copy of it to my elder niece as a gift. I'm fascinated by string theory, M-Theory, and the idea of the Multi-verse! I also recently started reading Ray Kurzweil's books and watching documentaries about the singularity. In the process I got reminded about the SETI@home project, and decide to give it a try yet again (third time's the charm?) to see if they had worked out all the bugs that kept crashing my computer the first two times I tried it and forced me to dump the program from my systems at the time. Glad to be able to hook up with a team from my Alma Mater in the process! Vivienne D'Avalon -- Soli boni moriuntur iuvenes; Audete esse mali!
