Personal background
As a person who grew up reading a lot of speculative books about the possibilities of life elsewhere in our universe, I have always had an interest in scientific research regarding the search for \\"other\\" life-forms. Life on Earth, as diverse as it maybe, is really just multiple manifestations of the same basic carbon based life-form. Like many others, I feel it's very important to know what other paradigms are possible for the thing we call life.

I now make a living as a technologist and research an area in computer science called Artificial Life - it would be interesting to see what we get to see first in our lifetime: alien life from another planet or truly sentient technologically derived artificial life.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
SETI is a very worthwhile project. It is a very clever use of technology for a very important scientific endeavour. Perhaps nothing will come out of it in our lifetime. Perhaps we\\'ll finally discover alien civilizations. Or perhaps, it\\'ll lead to other totally unforseen discoveries.
