Personal background
As is the case with many of us who grew up in the 60's, my imagnation was captured at an early age by the possibilities and magic of space exploration. And of course the idea of discovering the existence of and communicating with an intelligent extraterrestrial race only serves to magnify the wonder and excitement.

I have worked in helping professions most of my adult life -helping the developmentally disabled and those who suffer from mental illness to gain the skills and self confidence to lead happier, more fulfilling lives for themselves- so naturally the idea of working with an extraterrestial civilization to mutual benifit and enhancement, although very possibly idealistic and borne out of nothing more than fantasy, is very appealing to me and is an idea I choose to believe is a real possibility.

SETI@home is a wonderful project and I am happy to have the opportunity to be part of it.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I'm no statistician, but given the size of the universe, the number of galaxies, stars, and planets that exist, it seems inconceivable to me that Earth is the only planet that supports sentient life. This alone should be enough to convince anyone that SETI is a worthwhile project. Of course there are those who have watched and read too much science fiction and fear a warlike, agressive, and violent alien intelligence. While I can't dismiss this as a possibility, for some reason I don't believe this will be the case. Perhaps this is just because of a nieve belief that a race of superior intelligence would understand the self destructiveness and ultimate failure of violence and agression, or maybe based on nothing more than optimism. Whatever the reason, I do strongly believe the effort is more than worth any risks invoved. I have also heard the argument that there are more important human needs right here on Earth that we should be spending our money on. It is undoubtably true that human needs are woefully underfunded, but there are many other places that money could be taken from for this ( the military and corporate subsidies and bailouts for starters ). And I can't believe that SETI's budget is big enough to make much difference anyway.

The human psyche needs to look foward, to maintain the hope of new discoveries, the possibilities of improving ourselves. For me there is nothing better than Seti to help keep hope alive, as the saying goes.
