Profile: Tom Kennedy

Personal background
My name is Tom. I am a 54 yrs. old science geek from Sydney, Australia with not much experience but an inquiring mind and a reasonable amount of spare time. My main interest is in astronomy, and I would like to further my studies in astrophysics and quantum theory/physics. I am catching up with my (VERY) rusty mathematics at the moment hoping to improve enough over this year (2011) to be able to take an astronomy degree sometime next year, probably majoring in astronomical history. I regularly visit all the good websites for NASA, JPL, ESA, HST, STEREO, and the current robot-missions to inner and outer planets, and very much enjoy Spaceweather.com and other such "fringe" sites. Science in general has become a very central part of my life in recent years and I can only see it getting better and better.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think I mainly run SETI@home because I know that they need a lot of help. It's only right really that no one government runs SETI and that means they are more independent. However, that means that they don't have hugh resources to give them the kind of computing power they need, that's where we come in! It is such a cool thing to be able to lend some of my computers processing time to a search that could one day yield the greatest discovery that man will ever face - that of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe.

I think it is a very worthwhile shot to take, even though it is a very, very long shot. Just think of the payoff!
