Personal background
I'm a professional student. I'm trying to get a Ph.D. in Astrophysics now, which works nicely with the SETI interests I have. In the next two years I want to build my own mini-observatory with a prime focus 48 inch mirror (as a science fair project), and a small array of radio telescopes to do ap-synth work.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I participate in SETI at home because it is a very noble cause. Ther is life out there, to a statistical certainty. The problem is that we are probably looking in the wrong places (i.e. the EM spectrum). On the off chance that I'm wrong, I'm working for the cause. We are probably one or two major theoretical steps away from beginning to understand nature well enough know how real communications on large scales work. When that day comes, people will look at us SETI folks like a bunch of ignorant goddy-goodys who wasted our time: we will just grin and say that we told them so.
