Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Based on what we know about life and the size of the known Universe, it is highly unlikely, although not impossible, that we are the only advanced civilisation. After all, there always has to be afirst for everything.

Given the distances involved, the speed of light and the time that we have been radiating radio waves, it is unlikely that we will be "discovered" by aliens in the foreseeable future.

Radio and TV broadcasts are probably providing a better beacon that any specific device could, so there seems little point in setting up a specific beacon to duplicate what is happening for free.

I think that it is fairly unlikely that SETI will detect an extraterrestrial civilisation, but if one does not look, then it is certain that nothing will be found. It is like winning the lottery - you don't expect to win, but there is always that chance to inspire the imagination.
