Personal background
I am 25 years old and live in California (Go America! hehe) I am a HUGE fan of the English band The Cure, and one day I was browsing thier site (www.thecure.com) and saw a link at the bottom of the page ... "please help us find them". Intrigued, I clicked the link and found the SETI@home home page, downloaded the program, and here I am. :)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Personally, I think it is excessively arrogant of we little pests known as humans to think we are the only intelligent creatures in this universe. I think we are doing the right thing by looking for them, and I know that one day we will find them. That is why I downloaded SETI@home, because I want to be a part of the search and I know every hour of PC time will help tremendously. However, I must admit, I feel that the reason that we have not yet encountered any ET life forms is that any who ARE intelligent enough to find us are intelligent enough to know that in our past, contacting us would have been a mistake. Only when humans become more enlightened and less prone to blow up what they do not understand do I feel it would be safe to contact us for any other species. So I actually applaud their discretion in contacting us and pray that someday we as a race will make it safe to do so. Of course, this is assuming they are friendly, but one would think any race hostile to us would make a move BEFORE we got so technologically advanced.... but then again, who is to say we are? Hmm ok, I gotta stop thinking about this before I scare myself silly. :)
