Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Of all the systems, and all of the stars in those systems, and all of the planets around those stars, can humans be so short sighted as to believe that we are the only sentient life present? Of course ET life exists! We will discover it only if we learn not to screw it up. If you were ET, and looked in on our little blue marble, and saw all of the wars, famine, disease, hatred, and pretty much all of the other stupid things that Homo Sapiens do, would you want to make your presence known? Benefits and Dangers? The true benefit in any endeavour is knowledge! The true danger in any endeavour is the misuse of that knowledge. Yes, we should transmit a beacon. We should concentrate on a message of welcome, friendship, and peace, probably transmitted in either of the two universal languages: mathematics and/or music. However, I do not believe we should do so until mankind reaches a level of maturity at which he can meet our new friends with intelligence and compassion, not mistrust and hatred. The SETI@home project is a perfect example of the kind of message that we should send. Millions and millions of people, from all age groups, nationalities, socio-economic backgrounds, political and religious beliefs, working together inspite of our differences towards a common goal: to further the knowledge of mankind.
