Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
We live very close to the ocean, and we have found that the marine layer of offshore air is deadly on our electronic equipment. We have to run our six home-office computers at least a few hours every day unless the dry Santa Ana winds are blowing out to sea from the inland deserts.

We can run them guilt free because our house is completely off the electrical power grid. We generate all of our own power through solar panels that are producing a total of 3.8 kilowatts.

We used to run the original classic version of seti@home, back in the days of single cpu chips like the P4 Northwood and and the AMD Athlon XP 1700+, using a combination of Seti Driver and Roelof Engelbrecht's SETI Spy (remember that??) to cache and process units. Too bad Mr. Engelbrecht isn't here to see what all of these multicore processors can do.
