Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, I think extraterrestrial life exists. I reckon it's actually pretty common in the universe, but that the universe is so big and the time scales are so broad that the likelihood of encountering extraterrestrial life during your own lifespan is extremely low. Although, Stephen Baxter (author of "Time" and "Space") has some pretty interesting ideas on the frequency of life in the universe.

I wish we'd discover ET in my lifetime, but I think that it's more likely to happen in about 200 years or so. It'll take that long for us to be voyaging beyond this solar system.

I reckon that ETs out there will be much like us (not tlaking about physical appearance). I don't believe that they'll necessarily be greatly more evolved (socially, culturally or physically) than us. That doesn't mean they won't be, I just mean they don't have to be. There's not an awful lot stopping us right now from sending out manned flights beyond this solar system - it's just a matter of where we spend our money.

Sending and receiving radio signals is all very well and good, but when we get serious about exploring, we'll do it the way we've always done it - maniacs in ships.

The benefits and dangers quotient would be the same as whenever human cultures clash - we'll trade a bit, there'll be some killing and accidental catastrophes, some things will be lost and new things will be born.
