Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I've been with SETI@Home since around 1997 (then on a different account), since I first learned about the project. I immediately thought "Yes, this is what we should be doing! Listening for other civilizations".

With our (current) understanding about how the universe works, it seems to be impossible (or very, VERY impractical) to travel between the stars, so our only hope seems to be to make contact through radio.

Hopefully, we're not alone in our part of the galaxy. I "know" that we're not the only planet with life in the universe, but the time scale is enormous. There could have been civilizations all around us during the last one million years, but now they have all disappeared. Or there won't be anyone else for another five millions years. Or 250 millions years.

But we have to at least try and look. Our species is curious. We want to know. We need to know – so that we may know ourselves better.
