Profile: Gregory Benjamin

Personal background
I live and own a little business in San Diego, CA.
I run SETI on the machines in my business to give
them something to do other than space heating.

My favorite computer is my Sun Ultrasparc II running
Solaris 8.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1) Yes. No idea. Electromagnetic radiation. Humiliation. Few to none.
2) No, but we already do, albeit inefficiently.
3) To make me feel less guilty about keeping my computer on 24/7.

Start thinking about optical signals a bit more. I think it is likely
that extraterrestrials would harness the optical output of a nearby
star by erecting a huge (as in many square miles) mirror assembly
using steerable micromirrors or similar technology to sweep a modulated
signal through a fairly large angular swath. Many gigawatts of EMR
could be transmitted this way very efficiently by encoding a message
using small, rapid angular modulation to impart information as they swept through large areas.
