Personal background
Hi there.

I am Mike, based in London, England.

I work in database marketing.

I loved astronomy as a kid, and I guess that it has always stayed with me.

I am a radio ham, and I love listening for signals that come and go on a whim. The unpredictability of it all is exciting. Even if there is nothing to hear, the potential is there. This applied on an interstellar level gives us... SETI.

Oh, and who could forget that I am hopelessly addicted to the lovely Irish band The Corrs. They too are Out Of This World ;)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I first heard about SETI@home through someone at university, who was running software decryption keys. Then I saw a link on a friend of a friend's website.

Then it came together after seeing Contact, where I thought how cool it would be to hear a genuine signal from space.

I like SETI because I want to play my part in inter-stellar science even though I haven't the faintest idea of what most of it is about. SETI@home also has very cool graphics which are addictive to watch.

Something is definitely out there. I reckon the odds are more in favour of us not being alone than in favour of us being alone... (at least I hope so).

Should we transmit specifically for others to find us? Personally I think we as a race should dedicate more time to solving our own earthly issues than transmitting to space for the sake of announcing our existence. That's just the way I feel. But if and when all that is done, then if the resources are there, then why not?
