Personal background
I was born in 1950 in Washington, DC. When I was 3, we moved out into the country in South Georgia. Both of my parents were amateur radio operators. My father built a tracking system to participate in a project called 'Project Moonbounce', where amateur radio operators expirimented with bouncing UHF radio signals off of the moon. I was fascinated with the strange antenna that could point at the moon, even during a new moon. Listening to all of the signals that my father picked up held my attention for nearly every waking moment. I daydreamed that other people were in space sending signals back, and one day my father and I would receive them and become famous. Watching the moon every night started my love affair with astronomy. I never could justify spending money on a telescope as long as I had children that needed school supplies, and other family expenses. In January of 2008, the VA finally awarded my full disability, and I received 22 months of back pay. We paid off all of our back bills, and started fixing up our house the way we wanted. After buying all the things that my wife, daughter, & son-in-law wanted, my wife convinced to spend some of the money on myself. I was looking at 'scopes at Orion, and they had a 3" reflector on clearance for $70.00. On a hunch, I ordered it. Later that evening, I tried to show it to my wife, and the link was no good. I called the support number, and foound out that I had purchased the last one. Seeing the moons and storms of Jupiter with my own eyes ws fantastic. All of the picture I had seen, I loved, but seeing it for real is totally undescribable.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@home because I believe that there are other intelligent life forms. I can't accept the idea that in all of the billions of planetary systems, life formed on only one. I do have extreme troouble with the attitude that most people seem to have, of attacking or destroying them if they do pay us a visit. I also wonder, if I were in their place, would I go visit someone that was bent on destroying different factions of their own kind, that put a band of litter all over the upper atmosphere around their planet, and seemed to relish in blood and guts death scenes, not to mention that they were bent on attacking me if I visited?
