Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Are there extraterrestrials? Absolutely. Discovery is another proposition altogether. Given the speed of light/radio, any contact will certainly be one-way. Detection will most certainly be by radio. The only danger will be ourselves over-reacting. Overnight there will be hundreds of pulpits springing up and millions of people diving for their bomb shelters. Myself, I welcome it and will laugh as everybody else cries.
2. We've already transmitted a message. It'll be centuries before we get an answer. I can wait...
3. I run Seti@Home because I can. Maybe I'll be the computer to find that message, eh?
SETI@home and Astropulse are funded by grants from the National Science Foundation, NASA, and donations from SETI@home volunteers. AstroPulse is funded in part by the NSF through grant AST-0307956.
