Personal background
I am a late baby boomer and am a newer participant (as of December, 2007) to Seti@home. I have been interested in space since childhood in the 1960's. I have followed NASA throughout the years and have always believed in extraterrestrial intelligences. The Hubble Deep Field and Ultra Deep Field spaced shots fascinate me. I feel that life should exist out there. I think Seti is a great program and I am eager to participate.

I would also like to propose an possible alternate theory to ET communication through essentially a spiritual avenue. Perhaps it may be possible for alien intelligences in the physical to communicate with others via EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon). The instruments for EVP and ITC (Instrumental Trans Communication) are directed primarily towards communication with those humans who have passed over into spirit. If humans indeed possess a spirit I feel alien intelligences in the physical certainly have a spirit.

Perhaps some ET's may be able to communicate by psychic means even during physical life, using EVP (or another similar system of reception via electronics) as an instrument which may defy physical world limitations such as light speed, etc. A spiritual form of communication may hence break the constraints of physics, allowing instant communication and circumventing such physical world limits such as time, space and signal strength. Perhaps some ET's have learned to communicate on a higher level which exceeds our "expected" methods. At any rate, we need Seti, for the physical signals are surely there and we will discover them one day.

I feel life succeeds bodily death and we are never truly alone, either in spirit or in this great big world we call the universe.

The Physical Worlds:

I'm sure we'll get an ET physical message response within Seti at some point, it's mainly a numbers game of wait and wait and wait... The sheer number of billions of galaxies (if not a trillion or two or more) support at least a good probability of other physical intelligences. So let us concentrate on our local clusters, or better yet, within our own galaxy for to do otherwise mould be wasting time and such efforts would qualify as water under the bridge, as the ET message information received would be so ancient, if it even existed that far back in time. I'm a supporter of Frank Drake's equation even if he's off by a few. So the probability is there for success, its just we hope that communication via the physical is within nearby systems, so we may acknowledge and transmit back within a more reasonable time frame. I just hope other civilizations have not reached an irreversible point where they have killed themselves off either by polluting or destructing their own planets. Let's hope that civilizations do not rise to to a level of ineptitude, sort of like saying a working man will rise to his level of incompetence. If we can decipher them, their radio and television type broadcasts should be out there. It's not like anyone's completely invisible as they progress technologically. It's more a question of if they can stay alive.

The Spiritual World:

If the spiritual world is indeed real, it may be able to break the communicative constraints of physical world physics. Alive civilizations may be able to utilize such spiritual communcative methods, and perhaps this is a preferred model for communication across vast distances. How, you may ask? First, let's examine a possiblity of life after death. If there is a life after physical death, then it surely must be a less limited one. For example, if one (after physical death) may travel without walking, exist without working or money, be conscious without breathing, communicate without speaking, and not need food, clothing and shelter in the same sense as we do now physically to sustain our bodies, then the spirit world is surely less limited. If a communication aspect is possible utilizing a spiritual channel for civilizations, maybe this is another, less limited, way. I was member of the AA-EVP for over ten years although I've never tried to contact ET through EVP or ITC so I cannot personally validate such a presumptive method. It is just a thought which intrigues me.

Until we can validate and use such methods, starting with physical channels is our best option.

Regards,
Bill
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
The search for aliens is a collective challenge for humankind, one which we cannot forsake, for to do otherwise only 'alienates' us.
